Procalcitonin and carbonylated protein concentrations in equine synovial fluid
This study evaluated PCT and PCC in plasma and synovial fluid (SF), in healthy and pathological equine joints, affected by different types of arthropathy. Twenty-nine joints were evaluated and underwent orthopedic, radiographic, ultrasonographic and SF evaluation. The joints were divided in three groups: healthy, septic, and non-septic arthritis. PCT and PCC were measured in horse plasma and SF. Data distribution was evaluated and results were expressed as median, quartile values. Statistical differences in SF values among groups and correlations were assessed between plasma and SF of both PCT and PCC. The groups of joint ...

Role of ultrasound and inflammatory factors in the management of pediatric hip joint effusion
Septic arthritis is an important differential diagnosis of hip joint pain. Joint aspiration analysis is a necessary diagnostic measure for septic arthritis. In order to reduce the need for joint aspiration, we... (Source: Pediatric Rheumatology)

Pathological unstable dislocation of shoulder secondary to septic arthritis: A case report
CONCLUSION: Septic arthritis of the glenohumeral joint is rare condition in comparison with knee and hip joints. Therefore, the diagnosis requires a high index of suspicion, early evaluation and treatment of the affected shoulder. Our case is a good example of how we can use simple surgery techniques like open reduction and percutaneous fixation with K-wire in low and middle income countries where patient is not economically sound to afford arthroplasty.PMID:38100923 | DOI:10.1016/j.ijscr.2023.109114 (Source: Hand Surgery)

Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis case report illustrates a unique presentation of Lemierre's syndrome precipitated by Fusobacterium necrophorum. This case report describes a 20-year-old patient who developed Lemierre's syndrome secondary to a shoulder hematoma and neck abscess with multiple systemic complications in the absence of tonsillitis or oropharyngeal infection. Two weeks prior to presentation, the patient sustained a right shoulder injury and contracted COVID-19. Due to his Lemierre's syndrome, he developed right internal jugular ve...

Facet joint disorders: from diagnosis to treatment
Korean J Pain. 2023 Dec 11. doi: 10.3344/kjp.23228. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOne of the most common sources of spinal pain syndromes is the facet joints. Cervical, thoracic, and lumbar facet joint pain syndromes comprise 55%, 42%, and 31% of chronic spinal pain syndromes, respectively. Common facet joint disorders are degenerative disorders, such as osteoarthritis, hypertrophied superior articular process, and facet joint cysts; septic arthritis; systemic and metabolic disorders, such as ankylosing spondylitis or gout; and traumatic dislocations. The facet pain syndrome from osteoarthritis is suspected from a patient'...

Management of the Septic Wrist
Septic arthritis of the wrist can have severe deleterious effects on cartilage and bone if not promptly addressed. Expedient diagnosis and early medical intervention are important. The most effective strategy involves immediate arthrocentesis of the infected joint, enabling precise antibiotic selection based on joint fluid analysis. Diagnostic imaging is important in excluding fractures and identifying abscesses. This review explores the etiologic factors underlying septic wrist joint, identifying risk factors, and delineating optimal diagnosis and treatment approaches. The overarching goal is to impart valuable insights a...

Partial Oral Antibiotic Therapy May be Effective in Treating Complicated MRSA Among People with IDU
Clinical question: Are oral antibiotics effective in completing treatment for complicated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) among patients with injection drug use (IDU)? Dr. Bredenberg Background: Mounting evidence suggests that oral antibiotics may be effective in completing treatment for invasive infections after an initial period of intravenous (IV) antibiotic therapy. However, prior studies have not focused specifically on people with IDU and/or complicated MRSA bacteremia. Study design: Retrospective cohort study Setting: Single-site study at a large teaching hospital in a major metropolitan U.S. ar...

A Single-Component Dual Donor Enables Ultrasound-Triggered Co-release of Carbon Monoxide and Hydrogen Sulfide
Angew Chem Int Ed Engl. 2023 Nov 15:e202314563. doi: 10.1002/anie.202314563. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe development of dual gasotransmitter donors can not only provide robust tools to investigate their subtle interplay under pathophysiological conditions but also optimize therapeutic efficacy. While conventional strategies are heavily dependent on multicomponent donors, we herein report the first ultrasoundresponsive water-soluble copolymer (PSHF) capable of releasing carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) based on singlecomponent sulfur-substituted 3-hydroxyflavone (SHF) derivatives. Interestingly, the sul...
