Assessing Sensory Processing in Adults
AbstractPurpose of ReviewSensory processing disorders may occur throughout the developmental lifespan; hence, appropriate assessment tools should be available. However, the current state of evidence may be limited to children. In this review, we identify three tools assessing sensory processing in adults: Adolescent/Adult Sensory Profile, Glasgow Sensory Questionnaire, and the Adult Sensory Processing Scale.Recent FindingsHerein, we provide an overview of these assessment tools, issues on their utility, and research and practice areas worth reflecting on prior to considering their use. Among the assessment tools reviewed, ...

IJERPH, Vol. 19, Pages 6893: The Occurrence of the Sensory Processing Disorder in Children Depending on the Type and Time of Delivery: A Pilot Study
„ska Over recent years, the concept of Sensory Integration has become more popular. Knowledge about Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) also has grown, and it is often discussed in scientific research. Sensory disturbances can cause problems in learning and behaviour of children in whom no medical diagnosis has been made. These are healthy children regarding the environment, but their behaviour is often described as strange in the meaning not appropriate/not adequate to the situation. The aim of the study was to analyse if there is a correlation between occurrence of SPD and the time or the way of delivery. Participants ...

Neural Correlates of Auditory Hypersensitivity in Fragile X Syndrome
The mechanisms underlying the common association between autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and sensory processing disorders (SPD) are unclear, and treatment options to reduce atypical sensory processing are limited. Fragile X Syndrome (FXS) is a leading genetic cause of intellectual disability and ASD behaviors. As in most children with ASD, atypical sensory processing is a common symptom in FXS, frequently manifesting as sensory hypersensitivity. Auditory hypersensitivity is a highly debilitating condition in FXS that may lead to language delays, social anxiety and ritualized repetitive behaviors. Animal models of FXS, incl...

IJERPH, Vol. 18, Pages 10452: Regul-A: A Technological Application for Sensory Regulation of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder in the Home Context
Conclusions: The next phase of the study will be the use of the platform by families of children with ASD and occupational therapists. It is believed that, in the future, Regul-A will be used as a tool to gather, analyse and manage data on the occupational performance of children with ASD in the home context, particularly for activities of daily living, sleep, rest and play, facilitating the implementation of strategies and the sharing of information between parents and occupational therapists. Delayed Onset of Inhibition of Return in Visual Snow Syndrome
This study explored temporal changes in the allocation of attention using an ocular motor version of Posner's IOR paradigm, manipulating attention exogenously by varying the temporal relationship between a non-predictive visual cue and target stimulus. Forty participants with VSS (20 with migraine) and 20 controls participated. Saccades were generated to both validly cued and invalidly cued targets with 67, 150, 300, and 500 ms cue/target intervals. VSS participants demonstrated delayed onset of IOR. Unlike controls, who exhibited IOR with 300 and 500 ms cue/target intervals, VSS participants only exhibited IOR with 500 ms...

Exploring persistent complaints of imbalance after mTBI: Oculomotor, peripheral vestibular and central sensory integration function
CONCLUSIONS: Ongoing balance complaints in people with chronic mTBI are explained more by central sensory integration dysfunction rather than peripheral vestibular or oculomotor dysfunction.PMID:34024798 | DOI:10.3233/VES-201590 (Source: Journal of Vestibular Research: Equilibrium and Orientation)
