Prevalence, Deaths and Disability-Adjusted-Life-Years (DALYs) Due to Type 2 Diabetes and Its Attributable Risk Factors in 204 Countries and Territories, 1990-2019: Results From the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019
ConclusionLow and middle-income countries have the highest burden and greater investment in type 2 diabetes prevention is needed. In addition, accurate data on type 2 diabetes needs to be collected by the health systems of all countries to allow better monitoring and evaluation of population-level interventions. IJERPH, Vol. 19, Pages 2663: Netball Shoots for Physical and Mental Wellbeing in Samoa: A Natural Experiment
Lewis Keane Sport-for-development programs claim to address key determinants of recreational physical activity participation and subsequent development outcomes in low-income settings. We conducted a natural experiment with pre–post measures taken from women in the 12 villages in Samoa, some of which voluntarily participated in the sport-for-development intervention. The intervention comprised a six-week netball league delivered by local volunteers who attended coaching workshops, received ongoing support from the national governing body and were provided with infrastructure and equipment to conduct local...

Acute Kidney Injury: Incidence, aetiology, management and outcome measures of a Samoan case series
CONCLUSIONS: The hospital-based incidence and unfavourable outcomes of AKI are high in Samoa. Greater awareness of this under-recognised condition is warranted among the public, government officers, and health professionals.PMID:35198191 | PMC:PMC8850678 | DOI:10.1016/j.amsu.2022.103362 (Source: Annals of Medicine)

Post-Austronesian migrational wave of West Polynesians to Micronesia
This study examines Y-chromosome and mtDNA markers in the population of the island of Kiritimati in the context of geographically targeted reference populations from the Pacific. Kiritimati derives its population from the atoll islands of the Gilbert Archipelago and representsa geographicaltransitional region between Micronesia, Polynesia and Melanesia that likely played a critical role during theAustronesian expansion. The large presence(84.1%)of individuals withO-M175, O2a-M324 and O2a2b-P164 sub-haplogroups, 69.9% being O2a2b-P164, the Y-STR homogeneity within O2a2b-P164 and the very recent age of the sub-haplogroup(363...

Technical Note: Low clinical efficacy, but good acceptability of a point-of-care electronic palpation device for breast cancer screening for a Lower Middle-Income environment
CONCLUSIONS: The iBE had generally poor sensitivity and specificity when tested in a clinical setting which does not allow its use as a screening tool.IMPACT: This study demonstrates the need for an alternative screening method other than electronic palpation for lower-middle income areas. Sensitivity and specificity of the Alvarado Score for the timely differential diagnosis of acute appendicitis for a case series in Samoa
CONCLUSIONS: The Alvarado Score is an effective tool for the timely differential diagnosis of AA in our Samoan context. The high rate of complicated acute appendicitis warrants investigation to further improve the management of AA in the Pacific Island setting.PMID:35079363 | PMC:PMC8767311 | DOI:10.1016/j.amsu.2021.103219 (Source: Annals of Medicine)
