Applications of tissue-specific and cancer-selective gene promoters for cancer diagnosis and therapy
Adv Cancer Res. 2023;160:253-315. doi: 10.1016/bs.acr.2023.03.005. Epub 2023 Apr 20.ABSTRACTCurrent treatment of solid tumors with standard of care chemotherapies, radiation therapy and/or immunotherapies are often limited by severe adverse toxic effects, resulting in a narrow therapeutic index. Cancer gene therapy represents a targeted approach that in principle could significantly reduce undesirable side effects in normal tissues while significantly inhibiting tumor growth and progression. To be effective, this strategy requires a clear understanding of the molecular biology of cancer development and evolution and develo...

Systemic therapy escalation after stereotactic body radiation therapy for oligometastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer
CONCLUSION: With excellent local control and tolerance, SBRT for omHSPC patients represents an attractive approach to defer systemic therapeutic escalation and prevent its side effects. Accurate patient selection for SBRT requires more data with longer follow-up and higher numbers of patients pending the results of upcoming randomized trials.PMID:37701481 | PMC:PMC10493250 | DOI:10.1016/j.ctro.2023.100673

Treatment strategy for de novo metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma: a literature review
CONCLUSIONS: Given the diversity of metastatic NPC, a multimodality approach incorporating chemotherapy, immunotherapy, locoregional radiation and ablative treatment to metastatic sites has been shown to improve overall control. Further research is needed to determine the efficacy and optimal duration of maintenance therapy.PMID:37699604 | DOI:10.21037/cco-23-32

Does lymph node assessment change the prognostic significance of substantial LVSI and p53 status in endometrial endometrioid carcinoma?
CONCLUSIONS: Despite LN assessment, patients with high-intermediate risk early-stage or stage IIIC (with positive lymph nodes only but no other stage II or III risk factors) endometrial cancer with p53abnl expression and/or LVSI have worse outcomes. These patients may derive benefit from intensification with EBRT to improve local and pelvic control.PMID:37696217 | DOI:10.1016/j.ygyno.2023.09.001

The disappearance of gastric metastasis and liver metastasis in non-small cell lung adenocarcinoma is due to osimertinib
CONCLUSIONS: This is the first report to our knowledge of a patient who presented with gastric and hepatic metastases from lung cancer and achieved complete remission with osimertinib and local radiotherapy, with good quality of life, which also provides a basis for future clinical work and is of great significance.PMID:37695388 | DOI:10.1007/s00432-023-05386-7

Predictors and survival outcomes of having less than 12 harvested lymph nodes in proctectomy for rectal cancer
CONCLUSIONS: Older age, open resection, and neoadjuvant therapy were independent predictors of < 12 harvested LNs. Conversely, higher clinical TNM stage and tumor grade, coloanal anastomosis, and minimally invasive surgery were predictive of ≥ 12 harvested LNs. < 12 LNs harvested was associated with lower OS.PMID:37688758 | DOI:10.1007/s00384-023-04518-2

Monte Carlo-based optimization of glioma capsule design for enhanced brachytherapy
Appl Radiat Isot. 2023 Sep 5;201:111014. doi: 10.1016/j.apradiso.2023.111014. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe use of radiotherapy in tumor treatment has become increasingly prominent and has emerged as one of the main tools for treating malignant tumors. Current radiation therapy for glioma employs 125I seeds for brachytherapy, which cannot be combined with radiotherapy and chemotherapy. To address this limitation, this paper proposes a dual-microcavity capsule structure that integrates radiotherapy and chemotherapy. The Monte Carlo simulation method is used to simulate the structure of the dual-microcavity capsule with ...
