Effects of functional electrical stimulation cycling combined with arm cranking exercise on cardiorespiratory fitness in people with central nervous system disorders: a systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Hybrid FES cycling produced higher VO2peak compared to ACE or FES cycling during acute bouts of exercise. Hybrid FES cycling can improve cardiorespiratory fitness in people with a SCI. Additionally, there is emerging evidence that hybrid FES cycling might increase aerobic fitness in people with mobility disability related to CNS disorders.PMID:37098358 | DOI:10.1016/j.apmr.2023.03.026

Association of Time-of-Day Physical Activity With Incident Cardiovascular Disease: The UK Biobank Study
CONCLUSION: In conclusion, early morning, late morning, and evening are all favorable times of day to engage in physical activity for the primary prevention of CVD, while midday physical activity is associated with an increased risk of CVD compared with early morning physical activity after controlling for the levels of physical activity.PMID:37076242 | DOI:10.1123/jpah.2022-0505

Test-retest reliability and responsiveness of the Computerized Adaptive Test of Social Functioning in persons with stroke
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicate that the Social-CAT is a reliable and efficient measure with good test-retest reliability, small random measurement error, and good responsiveness. Thus, the Social-CAT is a useful outcome measure for routine monitoring of the changes in social function of patients with stroke.PMID:37028696 | DOI:10.1016/j.apmr.2023.03.017

Does spasticity correlate with motor impairment in the upper and lower limbs in ambulatory chronic stroke survivors?
CONCLUSIONS: Spasticity has a negative correlation on motor impairment in the upper limb but not in the lower limb. Motor impairment was significantly correlated with grip strength in the upper limb and gait performance in the lower limb of ambulatory stroke survivors.PMID:37026840 | DOI:10.1097/PHM.0000000000002247

Lifestyle-related habits and factors before and after cardiovascular diagnosis: a case control study among 2,548 Swedish individuals
CONCLUSION: The results indicate that a CVD event may increase motivation to improve lifestyle habits. Nonetheless, the prevalence of unhealthy lifestyle habits was still high, emphasizing the need to improve implementation of primary and secondary CVD prevention.PMID:37020317 | DOI:10.1186/s12966-023-01446-w

Physical Therapists Use Different Motivational Strategies for Stroke Rehabilitation Tailored to an Individual's Condition: A Qualitative Study
CONCLUSIONS: This qualitative study suggests that physical therapists use different strategies depending on the individual's mental health conditions, physical problems, level of cognitive function, personality, activities and participation, age, human environment, and the type of rehabilitation service where the individual undergoes treatment to motivate individuals with stroke during physical therapy.IMPACT: The findings of this study can provide experience-based recommendations regarding the selection of motivational strategies for stroke rehabilitation.PMID:37017336 | DOI:10.1093/ptj/pzad034

Vagus Nerve Stimulation Paired with Upper-Limb Rehabilitation After Stroke: Two- and Three-Year Follow-up from the Pilot Study
CONCLUSIONS: Significant effects of Paired VNS therapy at one year were maintained at years 2 and 3, and further improvements in both impairment and function were observed in years 2 and 3. These changes were associated with improvements in measures of activity and participation.PMID:37001842 | DOI:10.1016/j.apmr.2023.02.012
