Accuracy of Video-Based Gait Analysis Using Pose Estimation during Treadmill Walking Versus Overground Walking in Persons after Stroke
CONCLUSIONS: Video-based gait analysis using pose estimation provides accurate measurements of step length, step time, and hip and knee kinematics during overground and treadmill walking in persons after stroke. Generally, sagittal videos of overground gait provide the most accurate results.IMPACT: Many clinicians lack access to expensive gait analysis tools that can help identify patient-specific gait deviations and guide therapy decisions. These findings show that video-based methods that require only common household devices provide accurate measurements of a variety of gait parameters in persons after stroke and could ...

Moderate to Vigorous Intensity Locomotor Training After Stroke: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Mean Effects and Response Variability
CONCLUSIONS: LTmv improves mean walking capacity outcomes in subacute and chronic stroke and does not appear to have high risk of serious harm. Response magnitude varies within and between chronicity subgroups, and few studies have tested effects on daily walking activity or non-serious AEs.Video Abstract available for more insights from the authors (see the Video, Supplemental Digital Content 1 available at: http://links.lww.com/JNPT/A452).PMID:37678805 | DOI:10.1097/NPT.0000000000000456

Can trunk control scales differentiate for dependent and independent ambulation in ischemic stroke patients?
Conclusion: All TCSs could distinguish ambulatory and nonambulatory patients. The STREAM and PASS correlated the most with MBI in Groups 1 and 2, respectively.PMID:37671375 | PMC:PMC10475903 | DOI:10.5606/tftrd.2023.10773

Academy of Plant-based Physical Therapy: overdue to address a nutrition crisis with a transformative population approach
J Phys Ther Sci. 2023 Sep;35(9):645-658. doi: 10.1589/jpts.35.645. Epub 2023 Sep 2.ABSTRACTThis timely evidence synthesis supports the need for an Academy of Plant-based Physical Therapy. Given epidemiological and empirical evidence and the profession's values and practice scope, the time has come for a specialty of plant-based physical therapy based on population health principles. This review connects these factors. Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are largely nutrition-related resulting from unnatural elements of our diet (i.e., heart disease, several cancers, hypertension, stroke, diabetes, obesity, gastrointestinal di...

Vagus Nerve Stimulation Paired with Mobility Training in Chronic Ischemic Stroke: A Case Report
CONCLUSION: The participant demonstrated improved gait speed and timed distance after VNS-paired mobility training. Randomized, blinded trials are needed to determine treatment efficacy.IMPACT: This is the first documented case of VNS-paired mobility training in an individual with chronic poststroke gait impairments. VNS paired with mobility training may improve poststroke gait impairments.PMID:37669130 | DOI:10.1093/ptj/pzad097

The Stroke Upper and Lower Extremity Physical Function Measures Were Supported for Score Reliability, Validity, and Administration Efficiency for Patients Poststroke
CONCLUSION: The stroke upper extremity and stroke lower extremity PROM scores were reliable, valid, and efficient and had moderate change effect sizes for assessing physical function as perceived by patients poststroke with upper and lower extremity impairments. Scores had negligible floor and acceptable ceiling effects. Based on these results, the stroke PROMs are suitable for research and routine clinical practice.IMPACT: As item response theory-based measures, these PROMs support clinical practice guideline recommendations for the use of outcome measures in neurologic physical therapy and the administration of condition...
