The prevalence and prognosis of asymptomatic intracranial atherosclerosis in a community-based population: Results based on high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging
CONCLUSIONS: We found that ICAD detected using HR-MRI increases the long-term risk of a first-ever ischemic stroke in a stroke-free population, suggesting that the current primary prevention protocol of stroke awaits further optimization.PMID:37738517 | DOI:10.1111/ene.16057

Improved cerebral blood flow and hippocampal blood flow in stroke ‐free patients after catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation
ConclusionSR restoration with catheter ablation was associated with improved CBF and HBF at 3 months, maintenance of blood flow, and improved cognitive function at 12 months.

Cerebral Microbleed Patterns and Cortical Amyloid- β: The ARIC-PET Study
CONCLUSIONS: In this community-based cohort of nondemented adults, lobar-only pattern of CMBs or superficial siderosis is most strongly associated with brain Aβ, with no elevated risk for a mixed CMB pattern. Further studies are needed to understand differences in CMB patterns and their meaning across subgroups.PMID:37638398 | DOI:10.1161/STROKEAHA.123.042835

Alcohol Consumption and Cerebral Small- and Large-Vessel Diseases: A Mendelian Randomization Analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest a positive association of alcohol consumption with risk of cerebral SVDs and its inverse association with risk of large-vessel disease through intermediaries, such as hypertension or low-density lipoprotein cholesterol. These findings provide insight into potential causal mechanisms linking alcohol consumption with stroke risk.PMID:37612092 | DOI:10.5551/jat.64222

Trimethylamine N-Oxide and White Matter Hyperintensity Volume Among Patients With Acute Ischemic Stroke
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: In this observational study, TMAO was associated with cerebral small vessel disease determined by WMHV and acute lacunar infarction. The association was independent of traditional vascular risk factors.PMID:37610752 | PMC:PMC10448304 | DOI:10.1001/jamanetworkopen.2023.30446

Biliverdin reductase B is a plasma biomarker for intraplaque hemorrhage and a predictor of ischemic stroke in symptomatic carotid stenosis
Background and Aims: Intraplaque hemorrhage (IPH) is a hallmark of atherosclerotic plaque instability. Biliverdin reductase B (BLVRB) is enriched in plasma and plaques from patients with symptomatic carotid atherosclerosis and functionally associated with plaque IPH. We explored the biomarker potential of plasma BLVRB through 1) its correlation with IPH in carotid plaques assessed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and with recurrent ischemic stroke; and 2) its use for monitoring pharmacotherapy targeting IPH in a preclinical setting.
