Retinal microvascular abnormalities and risks of incident stroke and its subtypes: The Circulatory Risk in Communities Study
Conclusion: Retinal microvascular abnormalities were positively associated with the risk of incident stroke in the general Japanese population. Routine retinal photography could provide positive clinical insights into stroke risk stratification independent of blood pressure, antihypertensive medication use, and other risk factors.

Curcumin protects against hypertension aggravated retinal ischemia/reperfusion in a rat stroke model.
The objective of this study was to explore retinal damage in stroke spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and evaluate the role of curcumin in the retinal injury after stroke. Mature male SHR were used as the animal model for hypertension and age-matched male Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats as the normotensive controls. The rat model of stroke was made by bilateral vertebral artery electrocoagulation combined with transient bilateral common carotid artery ligation. The animals were randomly divided into sham group, ischemia/reperfusion group, solvent control group, and curcumin treatment group. Each group was subdivided into 2 h, ...

Delayed retinal vein recovery responses indicate both non-adaptation to stress as well as increased risk for stroke: the SABPA study.
CONCLUSIONS: In response to low norepinephrine, a reflex increase in SAM activity occurred, enhancing arterial vasoconstriction and hypo-perfusion. Concomitant HPA dysregulation attenuated retinal vein vasoactivity and tone, reflecting delayed vein recovery responses and non-adaptation to stress. These constrained vein recovery responses are indicative of increased chronic stress and stroke risk. PMID: 33104153 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Risk factors for ischemic cerebral stroke in patient with acute amaurosis fugax
CONCLUSION: Ischemic stroke and myocardial infarction were diagnosed in 0.3%-0.9% of hospitalized acute AF cases. Presence of hypercoagulable state, systemic vasculitis, CAD, and atherosclerosis each individually increased the risk of ischemic stroke by more than 3-fold; patients with these risk factors and acute AF should be closely monitored for developing acute systemic thrombotic events.PMID:36368408 | DOI:10.1016/j.jcjo.2022.10.010

Serum sortilin as a predictor of stroke in patients with intermediate carotid artery stenosis
CONCLUSIONS: Serum sortilin level is increased in the presence of symptomatic intermediate CAS and may have clinical value in the management of patients with carotid artery disease.PMID:35403511 | DOI:10.1177/17085381211067051

Acute ischemic stroke in young women secondary to atherosclerosis: a unique ophthalmic presentation with central retinal artery occlusion: a case report
We report a rare case of a young 33-year-old woman who presented an atypical ischemic stroke revealed by a unilateral CRAO. This case reports a rare condition affecting a young patient, and highlights the interest of ophthalmologic examination in the diagnostic of a neuro disease and the early management of ischemic stroke.PMID:35655682 | PMC:PMC9120742 | DOI:10.11604/pamj.2022.41.189.33147

Rational clinical approach to transient ischaemic attack, stroke and associated mimics: A retrospective cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: The present study demonstrated that specific clinical features and risk factors were associated with the final diagnosis at TIA clinic. These clinical features may assist with diagnosis of TIA in centres without access to a vascular neurologist.PMID:37190670 | DOI:10.1111/1742-6723.14238

FOTO-TIA: Focus on the Eye May Discriminate TIA, Stroke vs Mimics FOTO-TIA: Focus on the Eye May Discriminate TIA, Stroke vs Mimics
A look at the retinal microvasculature could discern stroke or transient ischemic attack from a mimic condition. In the near future, AI could expedite triage of these patients.Medscape Medical News

Mitral Valve Blood Cyst and Multi-Territory Ischaemic Stroke
A 78-year-old male with a history of hypertension and hypercholesterolaemia was admitted to hospital with acute left eye visual loss and diagnosed with retinal artery occlusion. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed multiple, bilateral cerebral infarcts involving supra- and infra-tentorial brain consistent with acute ischaemic stroke from a central embolic source. Extended ambulatory electrocardiographic monitoring displayed sinus rhythm with no evidence of atrial flutter or fibrillation. Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) revealed a cystic structure associated with the mitral valve, with no restriction or regurgitation.

Atrial fibrillation post central retinal artery occlusion:role of implantable loop recorders
ConclusionsPatients with CRAO are at risk for subclinical AF, similar to those with cryptogenic stroke. Long term monitoring to detect AF may lead to changes in pharmacotherapy to reduce the risk for subsequent stroke. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved
