Peripheral arterial disease and critical limb ischaemia: still poor outcomes and lack of guideline adherence
Conclusion Regardless of recent advances in PAD treatment, current outcomes remain poor especially in CLI. Despite overwhelming evidence for reduction of limb loss by revascularization, CLI patients still received significantly less angiographies and revascularizations.

Risk of Intracranial Hemorrhage from Statin Use in Asians: A Nationwide Cohort Study.
CONCLUSIONS: -Generally, no association was observed between cumulative statin use and risk of ICH among subjects without a prior history of stroke. An increased risk was identified among the non-hypertensive cohort, but this finding should be interpreted with caution. PMID: 25858194 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The Disconnect between Novel Oral Anticoagulant Eligibility & Provincial Drug Coverage: An Albertan Anticoagulation Clinic Audit
Publication date: Available online 25 February 2015 Source:Canadian Journal of Cardiology Author(s): Sandeep K. Dhillon , M Sean McMurtry , Tammy J. Bungard Canadian practice guidelines for non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) recommend most patients receive a novel oral anticoagulant (NOAC) in preference to warfarin to prevent stroke, but not all patients have insurance that covers NOACs. The gap between optimal therapy and drug coverage is unknown. We retrospectively assessed eligibility for NOACs in those with NVAF at our single-centre Anticoagulation Clinic and ascertained whether provincial drug coverage would be...

Contemporary Trends and Predictors of Postacute Service Use and Routine Discharge Home After Stroke Stroke
Conclusions Four in 10 stroke patients are discharged home without services. Although little has changed overall in PAC use since 2003, further research is needed to explain the shift in service use by type and its effect on outcomes.

Should Atrial Fibrillation Patients With 1 Additional Risk Factor of the CHA 2 DS 2 -VASc Score (Beyond Sex) Receive Oral Anticoagulation?
ConclusionsNot all risk factors in CHA2DS2-VASc score carry an equal risk, with age 65 to 74 years associated with the highest stroke rate. Oral anticoagulation should be considered for AF patients with 1 additional stroke risk factor given their high risk of ischemic stroke.

Long-Term Effect of Fee-For-Service-Based Reimbursement Cuts on Processes and Outcomes of Care for Stroke: Interrupted Time-Series Study From Taiwan Original Articles
Conclusions— There are improvement trends in processes and outcomes of care over time. However, the reimbursement cuts from the FFS-based global budget cap are associated with trend changes in processes and outcomes of care for stroke. The FFS-based reimbursement cuts may have long-term positive and negative associations with stroke care.

Cost-effectiveness analysis of dronedarone versus amiodarone, propafenone and sotalol in patients with atrial fibrillation: results for Serbia.
CONCLUSIONS: Results of our model indicate that dronedarone is cost effective therapy compared with amiodarone, propafenone and sotalol in patients with atrial fibrillation if the outcome is number of years spent without stroke. PMID: 25428811 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The Growing Gap in Hypertension Control Between Insured and Uninsured Adults: National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1988 to 2010 Epidemiology/Population
Hypertension awareness, treatment, and control are lower among uninsured than insured adults. Time trends in differences and underlying modifiable factors are important for informing strategies to improve health equity. National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys 1988 to 1994, 1999 to 2004, and 2005 to 2010 data in adults aged 18 to 64 years were analyzed to explore this opportunity. The proportion of adults with hypertension who were uninsured increased from 12.3% in 1988 to 1994 to 17.4% in 2005 to 2010. In 1988 to 1994, hypertension awareness, treatment, and control to <140/<90 mm Hg (30.1% versus 26.5%; P=0...

Increased risk of coronary heart disease in patients with chronic osteomyelitis: a population-based study in a cohort of 23 million
Conclusions This study demonstrates that COM is an independent risk factor for CHD, particularly in the younger population. Further studies are necessary to explore the underlying mechanisms linking COM and CHD.

Abstract 270: Primary and Specialty Care Follow-up Appointments after Stroke: Rates, Variability, and Opportunities for Improvement Session Title: Poster Session II
Conclusions: A high proportion of patients with acute stroke failed to have a primary care or specialty care follow-up appointment scheduled prior to discharge and this varied widely across participating hospitals. A collaborative approach for data-driven change and exchange of local best practices and facilitators could lead to significant improvement.

Positron Emission Tomography-Computed Tomography for Imaging of Inflammatory Cardiovascular Diseases.
Abstract Inflammation is a determinant of atherosclerotic plaque rupture, the event usually responsible for myocardial infarction and stroke. Possible causes of inflammatory cardiomyopathy include myocarditis, eosinophilic disease, and sarcoidosis. Although conventional imaging techniques can identify the site and severity of luminal stenosis, they do not provide information regarding inflammatory status. (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) for imaging of inflammatory cardiovascular diseases has been rapidly evolving. Integrated PET/computed tomography (CT) is becoming the method of c...
