Causal Association of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and Glycemic Traits With Cardiovascular Diseases and Lipid Traits: A Mendelian Randomization Study
CONCLUSION: We provided evidence for the causal effects of T2DM and glycemic traits on the risk of CVDs and dyslipidemia. Further investigations to elucidate the underlying mechanisms are warranted.PMID:35528012 | PMC:PMC9072667 | DOI:10.3389/fendo.2022.840579

Polycystic ovary syndrome: a "risk-enhancing" factor for cardiovascular disease
Fertil Steril. 2022 May;117(5):924-935. doi: 10.1016/j.fertnstert.2022.03.009.ABSTRACTPolycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder among women of reproductive age and is hallmarked by hyperandrogenism, oligo-ovulation, and polycystic ovarian morphology. Polycystic ovary syndrome, particularly the hyperandrogenism phenotype, is associated with several cardiometabolic abnormalities, including obesity, dyslipidemia, elevated blood pressure, and prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. Many, but not all, studies have suggested that PCOS is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), includi...

Heart health in polycystic ovary syndrome: time to act on the data
Fertil Steril. 2022 May;117(5):885-886. doi: 10.1016/j.fertnstert.2022.03.014.ABSTRACTPolycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), first described over 80 years ago, is a chronic condition with gynecologic, metabolic, and psychologic manifestations. Both hyperandrogenism and insulin resistance are associated with the high prevalence of cardiometabolic risk factors described in this population. Although robust data in reproductive-age women demonstrate a high rate of obesity, impaired glucose tolerance, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and metabolic syndrome, studies show mixed results in the adolescent and menopausal age groups. There is ...

Relationship of cumulative exposure to the triglyceride-glucose index with ischemic stroke: a 9-year prospective study in the Kailuan cohort
A single measurement of the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index, a simple and reliable surrogate marker of insulin resistance, is associated with ischemic stroke. However, evidence for an effect of a long-term el...

Differentiating Associations of Glycemic Traits with Atherosclerotic and Thrombotic Outcomes: Mendelian Randomization Investigation
Diabetes. 2022 May 2:db210905. doi: 10.2337/db21-0905. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWe conducted a Mendelian randomization analysis to differentiate associations of four glycemic indicators with a broad range of atherosclerotic and thrombotic diseases. Independent genetic variants associated with fasting glucose (FG), 2-h glucose after an oral glucose challenge (2hGlu), fasting insulin (FI), and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) at the genome-wide significance threshold were used as instrumental variables. Summary-level data for 12 atherosclerotic and 4 thrombotic outcomes were obtained from large genetic consortia and the Finn...

Could "cellular exercise" be the missing ingredient in a healthy life? Diets, caloric restriction, and exercise-induced hormesis
Nutrition. 2022 Feb 7;99-100:111629. doi: 10.1016/j.nut.2022.111629. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOvernutrition is a poor dietary habit that has been correlated with increased health risks, especially in the developed world. This leads to an imbalance between energy storage and energy breakdown. Many biochemical processes involving hormones are involved in conveying the excess of energy into pathologic states, mainly atherosclerosis, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes. Diverse modalities of regular exercise have been shown to be beneficial, to varying extents, in overcoming the overnutrition comorbidities...

Differential prognostic value of resistin for cardiac death in patients with coronary artery disease according to the presence of metabolic syndrome
AbstractResistin is associated with atherosclerosis progression by affecting inflammation and insulin resistance. There are controversial data regarding the prognostic value of resistin in stable coronary artery disease (CAD) patients. We prospectively investigated the long-term prognostic value of resistin in patients with stable CAD. A total 741 consecutive patients with stable CAD were followed for a median of 5.5  years. Serum resistin, lipids, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels were measured at baseline. Primary endpoints were cardiac death and secondary hospitalizations for a...

Impact of Sarcopenia on Functional Outcomes Among Patients With Mild Acute Ischemic Stroke and Transient Ischemic Attack: A Retrospective Study
CONCLUSIONS: In this study, the prevalence of sarcopenia in patients with stroke was lower than most of previous studies and patients with sarcopenia showed higher likelihood for unfavorable functional outcomes at 90 days after acute ischemic stroke or TIA. Further investigation of the interventions for treating sarcopenia and its impact on the outcome of ischemic stroke patients is needed.PMID:35370897 | PMC:PMC8964497 | DOI:10.3389/fneur.2022.841945

Efficacy of Lower Doses of Pioglitazone after Stroke or Transient Ischemic Attack In Patients with Insulin Resistance
CONCLUSIONS: Lower doses of pioglitazone appear to confer much of the benefit with less adverse effects than the full dose. Further study is needed to confirm these findings so that clinicians may optimize dosing of this secondary prevention strategy in stroke patients. This article is protected by copyright.
