Na ïve bayes classifier assisted automated detection of cerebral microbleeds in SWI brain images
Biochem Cell Biol. 2023 Aug 28. doi: 10.1139/bcb-2023-0156. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCerebral Microbleeds (CMBs) in the brain are the essential indicators of critical brain disorders such as dementia and ischemic stroke. Generally, CMBs are detected manually by experts which is an exhaustive task with limited productivity. Since, CMBs have complex morphological nature, so manual detection is prone to errors. This paper presents a machine learning-based automated Cerebral Microbleeds detection technique in the brain SWI scans based on statistical feature extraction and classification. The proposed method consists of th...

Recent advances in the structure and activation mechanisms of metabolite-releasing Pannexin 1 channels
Biochem Soc Trans. 2023 Aug 25:BST20230038. doi: 10.1042/BST20230038. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPannexin 1 (PANX1) is a widely expressed large-pore ion channel located in the plasma membrane of almost all vertebrate cells. It possesses a unique ability to act as a conduit for both inorganic ions (e.g. potassium or chloride) and bioactive metabolites (e.g. ATP or glutamate), thereby activating varying signaling pathways in an autocrine or paracrine manner. Given its crucial role in cell-cell interactions, the activity of PANX1 has been implicated in maintaining homeostasis of cardiovascular, immune, and nervous systems....

Altered plasma levels of apixaban in major gastrointestinal tract surgery: A case report and review of the literature
We describe a case of suspected altered apixaban disposition in a patient with an upper gastrointestinal cancer resection treated with apixaban for non-valvular atrial fibrillation. Diagnosis of ischemic stroke for left hemiparesis was confirmed due to recent emergence of a hypodense area in the posterior capsular nucleus of ischemic reference in a context of binuclear capsular lacunar lesions. Thus, apixaban underexposure was suspected from anamnestic data and oral anticoagulation was switched to parenteral at the next scheduled dose for stroke recurrence. Before switching apixaban pharmacokinetic analysis was performed a...

The potential therapeutic effect of phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitors in the acute ischemic stroke (AIS)
In conclusion, PDE5 inhibitors may have potential roles in the management of AIS through modulation of CBF, cAMP/cGMP/NO pathway, neuroinflammation, and inflammatory signaling pathways. Preclinical and clinical studies are recommended in this regard.PMID:37395897 | DOI:10.1007/s11010-023-04793-1

Unravelling the genetic causality of immunoglobulin G N-glycans in ischemic stroke
AbstractBackground: Evidence suggests that immunoglobulin G (IgG) N-glycosylation is associated with ischemic stroke (IS). However, the causality of IgG N-glycosylation for IS remains unknown. Methods: Two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses were performed to investigate the potential causal effects of genetically determined IgG N-glycans on IS using publicly available summarized genetic data from East Asian and European populations. Genetic instruments were used as proxies for IgG N-glycan traits. IgG N-glycans were analysed using ultra-performance liquid chromatography. Four complementary MR methods were perform...

Melatonin modulates the aggravation of pyroptosis, necroptosis, and neuroinflammation following cerebral ischemia and reperfusion injury in obese rats
This study aimed to investigate the roles of melatonin on pyroptosis, necroptosis, and pro-inflammatory pathways occurring in the I/R brain of obese rats. Male Wistar rats were given a high-fat diet for 16 weeks to induce the obese condition, and then were divided into 4 groups: Sham-operated, I/R treated with vehicle, I/R treated with melatonin (10 mg/kg), and I/R treated with glycyrrhizic acid (10 mg/kg). All drugs were administered via intraperitoneal injection at the onset of reperfusion. The development of neurological deficits, cerebral infarction, histological changes, neuronal death, and glial cell hyperactivation ...
