Best practice interprofessional stroke care collaboration and simulation: The student perspective.
Authors: MacKenzie D, Creaser G, Sponagle K, Gubitz G, MacDougall P, Blacquiere D, Miller S, Sarty G Abstract Interprofessional practice (IPP) is the accepted standard of care for clients following a stroke. A brief, embedded and evidence-based IPP team simulation was designed to address stroke care knowledge and IPP competencies for students within limited curriculum space. Each team was required to construct a collaborative care plan for their patient during the simulation and submit the care plan for evaluation of best practice stroke care knowledge and implementation with evidence of interprofessional collabora...

Real-world comparison of all-cause hospitalizations, hospitalizations due to stroke and major bleeding, and costs for nonvalvular atrial fibrillation patients prescribed oral anticoagulants in a US health plan.
CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated a significantly higher risk of hospitalization (all-cause, stroke/SE, and major bleeding) associated with warfarin, a significantly higher risk of major bleeding hospitalization associated with dabigatran or rivaroxaban, and a significantly higher risk of all-cause hospitalization associated with rivaroxaban compared to apixaban. Lower major bleeding-related costs were observed for apixaban patients compared to warfarin and rivaroxaban patients. PMID: 29047304 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Guideline ‐concordant initiation of oral anticoagulant therapy for stroke prevention in older veterans with atrial fibrillation eligible for Medicare Part D
ConclusionsOne ‐third of elderly Veterans at risk of stroke are not receiving recommended therapy. Increased coordination between Medicare and VHA providers may lead to improvements in anticoagulation quality and stroke prevention.

Stroke Rehabilitation Use and Caregiver Psychosocial Health Profiles in Singapore: A Latent Profile Transition Analysis
To identify and describe caregiver profiles based on their psychosocial health characteristics over a 12-month period and transitions among these profiles, to determine if stroke rehabilitation use at 12  months post-stroke differed by caregiver profile transition patterns, and to investigate if caregiver profiles at 3 months post-stroke moderate the association of stroke rehabilitation use at 3 months and 12 months post-stroke after accounting for covariates.

Self-reported quality of life following stroke: a systematic review of instruments with a focus on their psychometric properties
ConclusionsThis systematic evaluation of the psychometric properties of self-reported quality-of-life instruments used with adults after stroke suggests that validity across tools should not be assumed. Clinicians and researchers alike may use findings to help identify the most valid and reliable measurement instrument for understanding the impact of stroke on patient-reported quality of life.

Modeling the potential efficiency of a blood biomarker-based tool to guide pre-hospital thrombolytic therapy in stroke patients
ConclusionsThe use of a blood biomarker test to guide pre-hospital thrombolysis is cost-effective compared with standard hospital care in patients with ischemic stroke.

Measurement properties and interpretability of the PROMIS item banks in stroke patients: a systematic review
ConclusionThe PROMIS Global Health showed sufficient structural and construct validity and internal consistency in stroke patients. There is a need for further research on content validity, structural validity, and measurement invariance of PROMIS measures in stroke patients.Trial Registration Information: CRD42020203044 (PROSPERO).

Lean six sigma and stroke in rural hospital – The case of Baruch Padeh Medical Center
Batsheva Tzadok, Oran Ben Tov, Vladimir Vaispapir, Lev Shornikov, Olga Marik, Leon Martens, Eran Tal Or International Journal of Health Care Quality Assurance, Vol. 35, No. 1, pp.21-37 This case study aims to demonstrate the strengths of the Lean Six Sigma (LSS) methodology to improve the acute ischemic stroke (AIS) treatment rates and reduce process lead time at Baruch Padeh Medical Center (BPMC), a rural hospital in the Galilee region of Northern Israel. The LSS project redefined the BPMC stroke care pathway and increased its efficacy. The LSS methodology was implemented in September 2017 by integrating lean principles a...

Mediating effect of post-stroke depression between activities of daily living and health-related quality of life: meta-analytic structural equation modeling
ConclusionsThe findings suggest that both decreased ADL and PSD may reduce HRQoL, while a decrease in ADL tends to cause depression after stroke. Therefore, ADL and PSD reductions should be improved to achieve better HRQoL of stroke survivors. Future studies should continue to discuss other factors affecting HRQoL to achieve optimal recovery in stroke survivors.

Effect of Mental Practice on the Improvement of Function and Daily Activity Performance of the Upper Extremity in Patients With Subacute Stroke: A Randomized Clinical Trial
Conclusions: Training effects were demonstrated after MP training in patients with subacute stroke. However, the results of this study do not corroborate the hypothesis that the use of MP in addition to therapy as usual in patients with subacute stroke has an additional effect over neurodevelopmental therapy in addition to therapy as usual.

Positive predictive values of ICD-9 codes to identify patients with stroke or TIA.
Conclusions: Administrative ICD-9 codes 434.XX, 433.X1, and V12.54 had consistently high PPVs in identifying patients with a confirmed cerebral event. These codes could be used as part of a probabilistic approach to focus care activities on patients with the highest likelihood of a cerebral event. PMID: 24738552 [PubMed - in process]

Effects of a 4‐week transitional care programme for discharged stroke survivors in Hong Kong: a randomised controlled trial
This study was a randomised controlled trial conducted to test the effectiveness of a transitional care programme (TCP) which was a nurse‐led 4‐week programme designed based on the assessment–intervention–evaluation Omaha System framework. Between August 2010 and October 2011, 108 stroke patients who were discharged home, able to communicate, and had slight to moderate neurological deficits and disability were randomised into control (n = 54) and intervention groups (n = 54). Data on the patient‐related and clinical outcomes were collected at baseline, 4 weeks when the TCP was completed and 8 weeks after di...
