General awareness of stroke in the Czech Republic
CONCLUSION: The Czech respondents' interest in stroke is significantly influenced by their sex, age, place of residence, marital status, and the respondents' education. The findings play a role in the focus on preventive activities in this area. It is necessary to implement the general public education not only in general practitioners' offices but also in mass media in order to improve the awareness of stroke.PMID:34623124 | DOI:10.21101/cejph.a6212

Development and validation of a patient-reported outcome measure for stroke patients
Background: Family support and patient satisfaction with treatment are crucial for aiding in the recovery from stroke. However, current validated stroke-specific questionnaires may not adequately capture the impact of these two variables on patients undergoing clinical trials of new drugs. Therefore, the aim of this study was to develop and evaluate a new stroke patient-reported outcome measure (Stroke-PROM) instrument for capturing more comprehensive effects of stroke on patients participating in clinical trials of new drugs. Methods: A conceptual framework and a pool of items for the preliminary Stroke-PROM were generate...

Secondhand Smoke Exposure and Stroke The Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) Study
Conclusions SHS exposure is independently associated with an increased risk of stroke. Future studies are needed to confirm these findings and examine the role of long-term effects of SHS exposure on stroke outcomes.

Potential predictors for health-related quality of life in stroke patients undergoing inpatient rehabilitation
Conclusions: NIHSS, MMSE, BBS, FMA, and stroke side predicted most HRQOL domains. These findings suggest that different factors predicted various HRQOL domains in patients with stroke.

Estimating disability-adjusted life-years for subtypes of acute ischemic stroke.
Conclusion Non conclusive results are attributed to the concurrence of dissimilar acute clinical care processes and to the risk factors distributions, comorbidities and patient complications. PMID: 28453035 [PubMed - in process]

Stroke: the critically neglected first year post-stroke
Journal of Integrated Care, Ahead of Print. Purpose Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability in the USA and worldwide. While stroke care has evolved dramatically, many new acute approaches to therapy focus only on the first 3-12 hours. Significant treatment opportunities beyond the first 12 hours can play a major role in improving outcomes for stroke patients. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the issues that affect stroke care delivery for patients and caregivers and describe an integrated care model that can improve care across the continuum. Design/methodology/approach This paper details evidence-based ...

Glucose and lipid assessment in patients with acute stroke
Conclusions: The detection of abnormal metabolic milieu is a window of opportunity for aggressive management in persons with stroke as this will improve outcome. Routine screening for hyperglycaemia in persons with stroke using glycosylated haemoglobin tests and blood glucose may uncover previously undiagnosed DM.

A study of suicidal ideation in acute ischemic stroke patients
Conclusion: Several factors may be associated with an increased risk of suicidal ideation in acute ischemic stroke patients, including pre-/post-stroke depression, more severe stroke, having no confidence in treatment, as well as living in rural region. Our findings may have implication in risk assessment and intervention for acute ischemic stroke patients in reducing the burdens of suicidal ideation.

Improving stroke knowledge through a ‘volunteer-led’ community education program in Australia
Conclusion This study describes a novel approach to support the use of trained volunteers to provide a community-based, standardised education program for stroke. This program shows that community presentations can improve immediate and short-term knowledge of signs and risk factors for stroke.

Economic Burden of Informal Caregiving Associated With History of Stroke and Falls Among Older Adults in the U.S.
Conclusions In U.S. older adults, informal caregiving hours and costs associated with falls are substantial, especially for stroke survivors. Preventing falls and fall-related injuries, especially among stroke survivors, therefore has potential for reducing the burden of informal caregiving.

Dominant modifiable risk factors for stroke in Ghana and Nigeria (SIREN): a case-control study
Publication date: Available online 26 February 2018 Source:The Lancet Global Health Author(s): Mayowa O Owolabi, Fred Sarfo, Rufus Akinyemi, Mulugeta Gebregziabher, Onoja Akpa, Albert Akpalu, Kolawole Wahab, Reginald Obiako, Lukman Owolabi, Bruce Ovbiagele Background Sub-Saharan Africa has the highest incidence, prevalence, and fatality from stroke globally. Yet, only little information about context-specific risk factors for prioritising interventions to reduce the stroke burden in sub-Saharan Africa is available. We aimed to identify and characterise the effect of the top modifiable risk factors for stroke in sub-Sahara...
