Atypical clinical presentation mimicking stroke in an adult patient caused by a rare diffuse leptomeningeal glioneuronal tumour
We report an atypical clinical presentation of DLGNT. A 48-year-old male was admitted to hospital with symptoms of ischaemic stroke. Magnetic resonance imaging of the head revealed contrast enhancement of the meninges and other parts of the brain. A stereotactic frame biopsy was performed on the patient, which revealed the DLGNT. Diffuse leptomeningeal glioneuronal tumours are mostly seen in individuals less than 18 years old and are characterized by slow growth and low-grade histological appearance. Diffuse leptomeningeal glioneuronal tumours can be aggressive in adults.PMID:36946275 | DOI:10.5114/pjp.2022.125822

The role of the ATP-adenosine axis in ischemic stroke
AbstractIn ischemic stroke, the primary neuronal injury caused by the disruption of energy supply is further exacerbated by secondary sterile inflammation. The inflammatory cascade is largely initiated by the purine adenosine triphosphate (ATP) which is extensively released to the interstitial space during brain ischemia and functions as an extracellular danger signaling molecule. By engaging P2 receptors, extracellular ATP activates microglia leading to cytokine and chemokine production and subsequent immune cell recruitment from the periphery which further amplifies post-stroke inflammation. The ectonucleotidases CD39 an...

Mitochondrial encephalomyopathy with lactic acidosis and stroke-like episodes syndrome: a case report
Ultrastruct Pathol. 2023 Mar 5:1-9. doi: 10.1080/01913123.2023.2184892. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA biopsy of gastrocnemius muscle from a patient with mitochondrial encephalomyopathy with lactic acidosis and stroke-like episodes (MELAS) syndrome was studied histologically in semithin sections stained by hematoxylin-and-eosin (H&E) and toluidine blue, and ultrathin sections by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). H&E stain demonstrated typical ragged-red fibers (RRFs) and affected fibers in fascicles. Toluidine-blue stain showed an irregular meshwork in the center of RRFs. TEM demonstrated damaged myofibrils ...
