Diabetes and factors associated with cognitive and functional decline. The screening for CKD among older people across Europe (SCOPE) study
CONCLUSION: Decline in functional and cognitive status of community-dwelling older adults with DM was similar to participants without DM in a short period of 2 years of follow-up, though several clinical factors may increase its risk in this population.PMID:37668841 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-023-02536-2

Moderate elevation of serum uric acid levels improves short-term functional outcomes of ischemic stroke in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus
Serum uric acid (SUA), an end-product of purine catabolism diffused in the blood, is positively associated with the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, in the T2DM population, the association of ...

Older Age is Associated with Positional Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a highly prevalent disease affecting almost 1 billion people worldwide (1), and its prevalence continues to rise with increasing age and rates of obesity (2,3). Untreated OSA has been regarded as a strong risk factor for stroke(4), myocardial infarction and hypertension(5), diabetes mellitus(6), motor vehicle accidents (7), and cognitive impairment in the elderly population (8). Therapies for OSA include continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), oral devices and hypoglossal nerve stimulation (9).

Neurological Complications and Consequences of the Novel Coronavirus COVID-19 Infection in Elderly and Senile Patients (Literature Review)
AbstractBased on available publications, the article systematizes information about some forms of lesions of the central nervous system (CNS), their pathogenesis and clinical manifestations in the case of COVID-19. The risk factors, mechanisms of development, diagnostic approach, and the age characteristics of patients with neurological complications of COVID-19 are discussed. The specific mechanisms of the neuroinvasiveness and neurovirulence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, regardless of the age of patients and the presence of risk factors, lead to systemic damage to the endothelium of small-caliber vessels, generalized thrombov...

Prevalence and risk factors of stroke in a rural area of northern China: a 10-year comparative study
CONCLUSION: The current study suggests that the prevalence of stroke increased nearly by twofold in a population aged 65 years or older within the past 10 years. Hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and being male were the primary risk factors. In addition, these factors were more significantly associated with stroke in 2019 compared to 2010.PMID:34855152 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-021-02028-1

Factors Associated with Nonattendance to a Geriatric Clinic among Mexican Older Adults
Conclusion: Identifying geriatric factors linked to an increased probability of NA may allow one to anticipate its likelihood and lead to the design and implementation of preventive strategies and to an optimization of the use of available health resources. The impact of these factors on adherence to clinical visits requires further investigation.Gerontology

Vaccination in Older Adults: An Underutilized Opportunity to Promote Healthy Aging in India
AbstractOver the last 50 years, the Indian population aged 50 years and above (older adults) has quadrupled and is expected to comprise 404 million people in 2036, representing 27% of the country ’s projected population. Consequently, the contribution of chronic disease to older adults’ total burden of diseases in India is likely to escalate. Disease burden is notably amplified by immunosenescence, a deterioration of the immune system that develops with age, leading to increasing suscept ibility to infectious diseases and other comorbidities. Older adults with infectious diseases have a higher incidence and likelihood ...

The role of medications in successful aging
Climacteric. 2021 May 12:1-8. doi: 10.1080/13697137.2021.1911991. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSuccessful aging includes good health and low levels of disability. To that end, primary prevention is far better than managing subsequent organ damage. When medication is needed to prevent or manage disease, the preferred choice should be associated with the greatest benefits and fewest adverse effects. Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in postmenopausal women worldwide. Considering disease-adjusted life years, other leading causes are chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes mellit...
