Multicomponent material property characterization of atherosclerotic human carotid arteries through a Bayesian Optimization based inverse finite element approach
CONCLUSION: The developed iFEM approach combined with the inverted GP model successfully predicted component-wise material properties of intact atherosclerotic human carotids ex-vivo under physiological-like loading conditions.SIGNIFICANCE: We developed a novel iFEM framework for the nonlinear, component-wise material characterization of atherosclerotic arteries and utilized it to obtain human atherosclerotic carotid material properties. The developed iFEM framework has great potential to be advanced for patient-specific in-vivo application.PMID:34864574 | DOI:10.1016/j.jmbbm.2021.104996

Combined acquisition of diffusion and T2*-weighted measurements using simultaneous multi-contrast magnetic resonance imaging
DiscussionThe simultaneous acquisition of multiple contrasts reduces the overall examination time and there is an inherent registration between contrasts. By using the results of this study to control saturation effects in SMC, the method enables rapid acquisition of distortion-matched and well-registered diffusion-weighted and T2*-weighted imaging, which could support rapid diagnosis and treatment of acute stroke.

Human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells play a role as a vascular pericyte in the reconstruction of human BBB on the angiogenesis microfluidic chip
In this study, we established human BBB-like microvasculature on an angiogenesis microfluidic chip and analyzed the role of human pericytes (hPCs) and human astrocytes (hACs) on the architecture of human brain microvascular endothelial cells (hBMEC)-derived microvasculature on a chip. We found that human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (hBM-MSCs) play a role as perivascular pericytes in tight BBB reformation with a better vessel-constrictive capacity than that of hPCs, providing evidence of reparative stem cells on BBB repair rather than a paracrine effect. We also demonstrated that pericytes play an important role in v...

Nanoparticles-mediated emerging approaches for effective treatment of ischemic stroke
Biomaterials. 2021 Aug 31;277:121111. doi: 10.1016/j.biomaterials.2021.121111. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIschemic stroke leads to high disability and mortality. The limited delivery efficiency of most therapeutic substances is a major challenge for effective treatment of ischemic stroke. Inspired by the prominent merit of nanoscale particles in brain targeting and blood-brain barrier (BBB) penetration, various functional nanoparticles have been designed as promising drug delivery platforms that are expected to improve the therapeutic effect of ischemic stroke. Based on the complex pathological mechanisms of ischemic st...

Fucoidan-functionalized polysaccharide submicroparticles loaded with alteplase for efficient targeted thrombolytic therapy
Biomaterials. 2021 Aug 30;277:121102. doi: 10.1016/j.biomaterials.2021.121102. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIntravenous administration of fibrinolytic drugs is the standard treatment of acute thrombotic diseases. However, current fibrinolytics exhibit limited clinical efficacy because of their short plasma half-lives and might trigger hemorrhagic transformations. Therefore, it is mandatory to develop innovative nanomedicine-based solutions for more efficient and safer thrombolysis with biocompatible and biodegradable thrombus-targeted nanocarrier. Herein, fucoidan-functionalized hydrogel polysaccharide submicroparticles w...
