Evaluating the cause of death in obese individuals: a ten-year medical autopsy study.
Conclusion. Autopsies on obese individuals constitute a third of all adult medical autopsies in our center. Increased death rates in the obese due to pulmonary embolism and liver disease should receive special clinical attention. Autopsy findings in the obese population should contribute to overall premortem disease detection, prevention, and management. PMID: 25653872 [PubMed - in process]

The cost‐effectiveness of primary care referral to a UK commercial weight loss programme
This study investigated whether such a programme was cost‐effective compared with usual care. A decision‐analytical Markov model was developed to estimate the lifetime costs and benefits of the referral programme compared with usual care and enable a cost‐utility analysis. The model cohort transited between body mass index classifications and type 2 diabetes, stroke and myocardial infarction (MI) with risk, cost and effect parameter values taken from published literature. The cost per incremental quality‐adjusted life year (QALY) was calculated. Extensive deterministic and scenario sensitivity analyses and probabil...

A systematic review of behavioural techniques used in nutrition and weight loss interventions among adults with mobility‐impairing neurological and musculoskeletal conditions
Summary Obesity is a common comorbidity in adults with mobility‐impairing neurological and musculoskeletal conditions, such as stroke and arthritis. The interaction between mobility impairments and environmental factors often compromises motivation and ability to engage in healthy behaviours. Such difficulties to engage in healthy behaviours can result in energy imbalance, weight gain and a cycle of functional declines; i.e. obesity can exacerbate mobility impairments and symptoms and increase the likelihood of other comorbid conditions, all of which make it more difficult to engage in healthy behaviours. To help disrupt...

High-fat diet reduces neuroprotection of isoflurane post-treatment: Role of carboxyl-terminal modulator protein-Akt signaling.
CONCLUSIONS: HFD attenuated isoflurane post-treatment-induced neuroprotection possibly because of decreased prosurvival Akt signaling. PMID: 25142024 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Predictors of health-related quality of life in 500 severely obese patients: An assessment using three validated instruments.
Conclusion: The clinical impact of BMI on physical and general HRQL was small, and mental health scores were not associated with BMI. Chronic pain, depression, and sleep apnea were consistently associated with lower HRQL. PMID: 24415405 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Group Launches Initiative to Address Childhood Obesity
Two groups, Eat Well Play More Vermont and Live Healthy Vermont, are joining forces to lead the policy work in Vermont’s fight against childhood obesity, which is connected to increased risk for at least 20 chronic diseases, like heart disease, stroke, diabetes and cancer, said Tina Zuk, the government relations director for the American Heart Association.

Partnerships Can Fight Childhood Obesity in Tennessee (Opinion)
America has a weight problem — and I’m not simply referring to the few extra pounds many of us pick up over the holidays. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 70 percent of Americans are either overweight or obese, and our wide waistlines put us at greater risk for life-threatening health conditions such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and several types of cancer. Unfortunately, Tennesseans fare worse than most.
