Impact of visceral fat on coronary artery disease as defined by quantitative computed tomography angiography
CONCLUSIONS: These findings demonstrate progression with regard to VF and TPV, NCP volume, and LD-NCP volume. Notably, there was a progression of VF and amount of LD-NCP, which is known to be high risk for future cardiovascular events. A consistent progression may indicate the future utility of VF in CVD risk stratification.PMID:37559558 | DOI:10.1002/oby.23804

Differential and sex- and age-specific risks of cardiometabolic diseases with unrelated metabolic syndrome dimensions
CONCLUSIONS: MetS can be dissected into two distinct presentations characterized by differential sex- and age-associated cardiometabolic disease risk, confirming the loss of information using the dichotomous MetS.PMID:37254031 | DOI:10.1002/oby.23778

Weight change over 4 years and risk of cardiovascular diseases in Chinese: The China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study
Abstract Introduction: Previous studies had reported the impact of weight changes in middle age on the incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD), but the results were inconsistent. In present study, we aimed to investigated the impact of a 4-year weight change on the risk of CVD in middle-aged and elderly Chinese individuals. Methods: Using nationally representative data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, 7,530 participants (age: 58.2 ± 8.9 years) were included. Weight change was calculated by subtracting weight at baseline from that at 4-year follow-up. Weight change over 4 years was divided into ...

BMI trajectories, morbidity, and mortality in England: a two-step approach to estimating consequences of changes in BMI
CONCLUSIONS: These results emphasize the importance of looking at change in BMI alongside most recent BMI; BMI trajectories should be considered where possible when assessing health risks. The results suggest that established BMI thresholds should not be used in isolation to identify health risks, particularly in older adults.PMID:35920148 | DOI:10.1002/oby.23510

Heart valve surgery and the obesity paradox: A systematic review
SummaryObesity has been associated with increased incidence of comorbidities and shorter life expectancy, and it has generally been assumed that patients with obesity should have inferior outcomes after surgery. Previous literature has often demonstrated equivalent or even improved rates of mortality after cardiac surgery when compared to their lower-weight counterparts, coined the obesity paradox. Herein, we aim to review the literature investigating the impact of obesity on surgical valve interventions. PubMed and Embase were systematically searched for articles published from 1 January 2000 to 15 October 2021. A total o...

Pharmacotherapy of obesity in complex diseases
SummaryMore than 40% of adults in the United States suffer from obesity. Obesity is inextricably linked to many chronic illnesses like type-2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, heart disease, sleep apnea, stroke, and cancers. When used in combination with lifestyle modifications, pharmacotherapy has a vital role in treating obesity and improves short-term and long-term outcomes. A growing number of physicians are now interested in obesity medicine, and many of them are seeking guidance on how to treat complex patients with co-morbidities. This review provides a practical guide to the use of anti-obesity medic...

Cardiorenal outcomes in eligible patients referred for bariatric surgery
CONCLUSIONS: Non-progression to surgery associates with increased CVD despite low baseline prevalence of CVD. The cardiorenal benefits of bariatric surgery warrant confirmation in a well-powered randomized clinical trial.PMID:34724336 | DOI:10.1002/oby.23294
