Breathing pattern and asymmetry of the rib cage in patients with hemiplegia after stroke: Comparison of breath-stacking technique and incentive spirometry
Conclusions: The results suggest that the BS technique reduces the asymmetry of the rib cage and optimizes the performance of the respiratory system during maintenance of lung volumes compared to the technique of incentive spirometry in subjects with hemiplegia following stroke.

C-reactive protein: Its correlations with pulmonary function, physical capacity and anthropometric measurements in patients with metabolic syndrome
Conclusions: It was found negative relationships between CRP level with PF and PC. On the contrary, there were positive correlations of CRP with parameters of BC. We think that it can be provided decline in the CRP level and increment in PF improving the functional capacity and body composition with aerobic exercise in patients with MS.

Impact of self-reported gastroesophageal reflux disease in subjects from COPDGene cohort.
CONCLUSIONS: In COPD the presence of physician-diagnosed GERD is associated with increased symptoms, poorer QOL and increased frequency of exacerbations at baseline and during follow-up. These associations are maintained after controlling for PPI use. The PPI-exacerbations association could result from confounding-by-indication. PMID: 24894541 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]

Assessment of Risk in Chronic Airways Disease Evaluation (ARCADE): Protocol and preliminary data.
Abstract Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a multisystem disease. Established comorbidities include cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, loss of muscle mass and function, depression, and impaired quality of life. The natural history is not well understood. The Assessment of Risk in Chronic Airways Disease Evaluation (ARCADE) is a longitudinal study of comorbidities in COPD. The primary aims are to delineate the progression and interrelationships of cardiovascular disease and associated comorbidities. Each year ARCADE aims to recruit 250 patients diagnosed with COPD and 50 comparators (free from resp...

Phase-contrast MRI for Detection of Mild Systemic Hemodynamic Response after Segmental Allergen Challenge in Asthmatic Patients
Conclusions: In asthmatic patients, MRI-derived hemodynamic parameters using phase-contrast MRI are slightly altered after segmental allergen provocation compared to normal controls indicating a mild systemic reaction to local allergen challenge.

Impact of self-reported Gastroesophageal reflux disease in subjects from COPDGene cohort
Background: The coexistence of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and COPD has been recognized, but there has been no comprehensive evaluation of the impact of GERD on COPD-related health status and patient-centered outcomes. Methods: Cross-sectional and longitudinal study of 4,483 participants in the COPDGene cohort who met GOLD criteria for COPD. Physician-diagnosed GERD was ascertained by questionnaire. Clinical features, spirometry and imaging were compared between COPD subjects without versus with GERD. We evaluated the relationship between GERD and symptoms, exacerbations and markers of microaspiration in univari...

Effects of Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Obesity on Exercise Function in Children
Conclusions:Children with OSA are exercise limited due to a reduced cardiac output and VO2 peak at peak exercise capacity, independent of their weight status. Comorbid OSA can further decrease exercise performance in obese children.Citation:Evans CA, Selvadurai H, Baur LA, Waters KA. Cross-sectional associations between prevalent vertebral fracture and pulmonary function in the sixth Tromslatin small letter o with stroke study
Background: Persons with vertebral fracture may have reduced pulmonary function, but this association has not been much studied. The aim of this cross-sectional study was therefore to examine the relationship between vertebral fracture and pulmonary function in a general, elderly population. Methods: Vertebral morphometry was used for vertebral fracture assessment in 2132 elderly men (n = 892) and women (n = 1240) aged 55 to 87 years in the population-based Troms[latin small letter o with stroke] Study 2007--08. Pulmonary function was examined by spirometry. Pulmonary function was expressed as FVC% predicted, FEV1% predict...
