Patient characteristics of new initiators of glycopyrronium bromide (GLY) - A multinational, multi-database real-world drug-utilization study
Conclusion: In real life, majority of first-time GLY use was in line with product label regarding dosing and COPD severity. More than 1/4 of patients used long-acting bronchodilators before GLY start. Cardiovascular comorbidity was considerable.

Ventilatory pattern in chronic stroke survivors
The aim of this cross-sectional study was to compare dynamic lung volumes in chronic stroke survivors (SS) with a control group (CG) of healthy people matched by age and sex.Forced spirometries were performed, in line with the international statements. The reference values were calculated with the predictive equations proposed by Roca et al,1986.T test was used to determine differences in dynamic lung volumes between SS and CG.A cluster analysis was practiced to classify 2 different groups within the SS regarding to their dynamic lung volumes. The average age in SS (n=33) was 56.9±15.7 years. There were no significan...

Reliability of three respiratory muscle tests in post-stroke patients. A pilot study
Conclusion: The pilot data show a good inter-rater reliability of all 3 measures, but SNIP may require a practice session in stroke patients.

Respiratory System Function in Patients after Aortic Valve Replacement through Right Anterior Minithoracotomy
Conclusion Pulmonary functional status measured with spirometry parameters was diminished after RAT-AVR surgery. Management of Sickle Cell Disease: Recommendations from the 2014 Expert Panel Report.
Abstract Family physicians are the primary and sometimes only health care resource for families affected by sickle cell disease. Recently published guidelines provide important recommendations for health maintenance, acute care, and monitoring of disease-modifying therapy in persons with this condition. This overview highlights some of the most important clinical activities that can and should be carried out in the community care setting. Children with sickle cell anemia should receive prophylactic penicillin from birth through at least five years of age, and all persons with sickle cell disease require vaccinatio...

COPD and risk of cardiovascular disease: A prospective study of 0.5M Chinese adults
Conclusions: COPD was independently associated with an increased risk of CV events. COPD detection and management should be integrated with CV disease risk reduction efforts.(Funded by GSK).

Unemployment in COPD: Results from the BOLD study
Conclusion: There was substantial variation in employment of COPD-patients, but the overall effect of COPD on unemployment was modest when we adjusted for geography, demographic factors and comorbidities.

What's the role of stroke volume and cardiac output during exercise in cystic fibrosis?
Conclusion: we found lower SV and CO at rest and an attenuated increment of those parameters during exercise in GrB compared to GrA and GrC.Alterated conditions in GrB could be due to higher values of SVR, reduced physical activity and worse nutritional status.

Exertional-induced bronchoconstriction: Comparison between cardiopulmonary exercise test and methacholine challenging test.
CONCLUSION: Pulmonary response to exercise in patients with positive methacholine test is insufficient. The dead space ventilation in these patients has increased. Also, dynamic hyperinflation in patients with positive methacholine test causes the reduced stroke volume and O 2 pulse in these patients. PMID: 26440232 [PubMed - in process]

Lower Extremity Proximal Muscle Function and Dyspnea in Older Persons
ConclusionPoor performance on a single chair stand was associated with an adjusted 85% greater likelihood of moderate to severe exertional dyspnea than normal performance. These results suggest that reduced proximal muscle function of the lower extremities is associated with moderate to severe exertional dyspnea, even after adjusting for multiple confounders.

Causes of deaths in COPD patients in primary care setting - a 6-year follow-up.
CONCLUSIONS: Study performed six years after COPD diagnosis revealed that 23.5% of subjects died. The main causes of deaths were the following: cardiovascular diseases (mainly heart attack and stroke), COPD exacerbations and lung cancer (more than 75%). Death risk in COPD patients was associated with age, male sex, dyspnoea and severity of the disease. PMID: 26050979 [PubMed - in process]

Cognitive dysfunction is greater in patients hospitalised with COPD exacerbations than with worsening heart failure
ConclusionsHospitalised COPD patients with exacerbations have greater cognitive impairment than those with worsening heart failure. Differences may be explained by greater smoking load and more anxiety and depression.

Medical knowledge level of Roma inmantes
Conclusions. We have noticed that a great part of the subjects did not have basic medical knowledge. We can say that the level of tuition has a direct impact on FEV1. The primary care physician can potentially improve patient outcomes by increasing medical education level, including the recognition of exacerbation, risk factors, signs and symptoms. The format for the delivery of education will vary depending on staff availability and expertise.
