Burden of depression and predictors among Ethiopian stroke survivors: Cross-sectional study
CONCLUSION: The study findings presented that nearly half of the stroke patients suffered from post stroke depression. Post-stroke depression was strongly associated with patient occupation, marital status, and level of education There is urgent need for integration of screening for and management of post-stroke depression among stroke survivors.PMID:34712476 | PMC:PMC8531554 | DOI:10.1016/j.amsu.2021.102926

Neurophysiology tools to lower the stroke onset to treatment time during the golden hour: microwaves, bioelectrical impedance and near infrared spectroscopy
Ann Med. 2022 Dec;54(1):2658-2671. doi: 10.1080/07853890.2022.2124448.ABSTRACTReperfusion therapy administration timing in acute ischaemic stroke is the main determinant of patients' mortality and long-term disability. Indeed, the first hour from the stroke onset is defined the "golden hour", in which the treatment has the highest efficacy and lowest side effects. Delayed ambulance transport, inappropriate triage and difficulty in accessing CT scans lead to delayed onset to treatment time (OTT) in clinical practice. To date brain CT scan is needed to rule out intracranial haemorrhage, which is a major contraindication to t...

Predictive value of motor-evoked potentials for motor recovery in patients with hemiparesis secondary to acute ischemic stroke
CONCLUSIONS: Among patients with moderate-to-severe ischemic stroke, MEP + patients had better motor recoveries (approximately 70%) than MEP- patients at 90 days post-stroke. MEP + patients had better functional outcomes than MEP- patients.PMID:37345693 | DOI:10.1080/07853890.2023.2225144

Gender differences in stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation in general practice: using the GRASP‐AF audit tool
ConclusionWomen with AF are at higher risk of stroke than men without OAC. The gender‐related differences in risk of stroke disappear if OAC is used. Despite this, women are more likely not to receive OAC.

Ischemic stroke outcome: A review of the influence of post-stroke complications within the different scenarios of stroke care.
Abstract Stroke remains one of the main causes of death and disability worldwide. The challenge of predicting stroke outcome has been traditionally assessed from a general point of view, where baseline non-modifiable factors such as age or stroke severity are considered the most relevant factors. However, after stroke occurrence, some specific complications such as hemorrhagic transformations or post stroke infections, which lead to a poor outcome, could be developed. An early prediction or identification of these circumstances, based on predictive models including clinical information, could be useful for physici...

Comparative Effectiveness of Blood Pressure-lowering Drugs in Patients who have Already Suffered From Stroke: Traditional and Bayesian Network Meta-analysis of Randomized Trials
Abstract: Hypertension is the most important risk factor for stroke and stroke recurrence. However, the preferred blood pressure (BP)-lowering drug class for patients who have suffered from a stroke has yet to be determined. To investigate the relative effects of BP-lowering therapies [angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEI), angiotensin receptor blockers (ARB), β blockers, calcium channel blockers (CCBs), diuretics, and combinations of these drugs] in patients with a prior stroke history, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis using both traditional frequentist and Bayesian random-effects models and m...

Usefulness of cardiometabolic index for the estimation of ischemic stroke risk among general population in rural China.
CONCLUSION: The strong and independent association of CMI with ischemic stroke in females, in comparison with the much lesser degree in males, provides further insight to better stratify by sex in investigations of ischemic stroke and solidly corroborates the potential role of ischemic stroke prevention targeted at CMI. The potential impact of sleep-related movement disorders on stroke risk: a population-based longitudinal study
ConclusionsPatients with SRMD were found to have an increased risk of all-cause stroke along with a higher possibility of hemorrhagic stroke over ischemic stroke.

Relationship of atopic dermatitis with stroke and myocardial infarction: A meta-analysis
Conclusions: AD is independently associated with an increased risk of stroke and MI, especially in male subjects and ischemic stroke and the risk is associated with the severity of AD.

A nonlinear association between resting heart rate and ischemic stroke among community elderly hypertensive patients.
Conclusions: In Chinese elderly hypertensive patients, elevated resting heart rate was an independent predictor of ischemic stroke, and the optimal resting heart rate was around 70bpm. PMID: 31829063 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Impact of triglyceride playing on stroke severity correlated to bilirubin
Major lipids making effects on the occurrence of acute ischemic stroke (AIS) is well recognized, but their roles on stroke severity remain uncertain. To explore the exact roles of lipids playing on stroke severity and the possible mechanism, we conduct this observational study. Data was collected from patients with AIS from February 2008 to May 2012. The level of major lipids was compared among AIS groups with different severity and investigated the correlation. Also, the relationship existed between major lipids and bilirubin. Mechanism of major lipids playing on stroke severity was researched to determine if oxidative s...

Strategies adopted to manage physical and psychosocial challenges after returning home among people with stroke: A qualitative study
This study was conducted to explore how stroke survivors manage their life after returning home from the hospital. This was a qualitative study with individual, semi-structured interviews. We recruited a purposive sample of adults who had a first or recurrent ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke and currently lived at home. Participants were asked about their post-stroke experiences, challenges encountered, and strategies adopted for managing post-stroke conditions. Data were transcribed verbatim and analyzed using thematic analysis. A total of 30 stroke survivors (mean age = 61.97 years, SD = 10.20) were interviewed. ...
