A nonlinear association between resting heart rate and ischemic stroke among community elderly hypertensive patients.

Conclusions: In Chinese elderly hypertensive patients, elevated resting heart rate was an independent predictor of ischemic stroke, and the optimal resting heart rate was around 70bpm. PMID: 31829063 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Abstract For the last two decades, researchers have placed hopes in a new era in which a combination of reperfusion and neuroprotection would revolutionize the treatment of stroke. Nevertheless, despite the thousands of papers available in the literature showing positive results in preclinical stroke models, randomized clinical trials have failed to show efficacy. It seems clear now that the existing data obtained in preclinical research have depicted an incomplete picture of stroke pathophysiology. In order to ameliorate bench-to-bed translation, in this review we first describe the main actors on stroke inflamma...

In conclusion, it remains unclear if brain-specific regional and temporal changes occur in the expression of the different APP variants during AD progression. Since APP is also found in blood cells, assessing the changes in APP mRNA expression in peripheral blood cells from AD patients has been considering an alternative. However, again the quantification of APP mRNA in peripheral blood cells has generated controversial results. Brain APP protein has been analyzed in only a few studies, probably as it is difficult to interpret the complex pattern of APP variants and fragments. We previously characterized the soluabl...

In conclusion, using a large cohort with rich health and DNA methylation data, we provide the first comparison of six major epigenetic measures of biological ageing with respect to their associations with leading causes of mortality and disease burden. DNAm GrimAge outperformed the other measures in its associations with disease data and associated clinical traits. This may suggest that predicting mortality, rather than age or homeostatic characteristics, may be more informative for common disease prediction. Thus, proteomic-based methods (as utilised by DNAm GrimAge) using large, physiologically diverse protein sets for p...

AbstractIn October 2019, a viral infectious disease appeared in the city of Wuhan in China. A new betacoronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, has been recognized as the responsible pathogen in this infection. Although coronavirus disease is principally expressed as a pulmonary infection, critical SARS-CoV-2 infection is frequently complicated with coagulopathy, and thromboembolic events are recognizable in several patients. Dehydration, acute inflammatory condition, protracted immobilization during disease, existence of multiple cardiovascular risk factors such as diabetes, obesity or hypertension, previous coronary artery disease, ische...

Conclusion This is one of the few studies analyzing the association of recent cannabis use and AIS using admission urine toxicology test independent of polysubstance use. Although our study has limitations, we did not find an independent association between recent cannabis use and the incidence of AIS. Further studies using urine toxicology tests with larger sample size and including dosage of cannabis exposure should be conducted.

The microbiota–gut–brain axis is considered a central regulator of the immune system after acute ischemic stroke (AIS), with a potential role in determining outcome. Several pathways are involved in the evolution of gut microbiota dysbiosis after AIS. Brain–gut and gut–brain signaling pathways involve bidirectional communication between the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis, the autonomic nervous system, the enteric nervous system, and the immune cells of the gut. Alterations in gut microbiome can be a risk factor and may also lead to AIS. Both risk factors for AIS and gut-microbiome c...

This study delves into the mechanisms by which a short period of fasting can accelerate wound healing. Fasting triggers many of the same cellular stress responses, such as upregulated autophagy, as occur during the practice of calorie restriction. It isn't exactly the same, however, so it is always worth asking whether any specific biochemistry observed in either case does in fact occur in both situations. In particular, the period of refeeding following fasting appears to have beneficial effects that are distinct from those that occur while food is restricted. Multiple forms of therapeutic fasting have been repor...

Unhealthy food habits are associated with non-communicable diseases (NCD) [1 –3] and nutritional deficiencies [4]. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) [5], more than half of all deaths were due to ten main causes, with the leading killers being ischaemic heart disease and stroke. Diets characterized by a low intake of fruit and vegetable (FV) and fibre increas e the risk of hypertension, diabetes mellitus (DM), obesity, cardiovascular diseases (CVD), gastrointestinal cancers, nutritional deficiencies, pancreatic diseases, depression and the development of cognitive impairment and dementia [4–7].

Conclusion: BMI has a nonlinear relationship with 1-year unplanned readmission in patients with myocardial infarction. The 1-year unplanned readmission rate of overweight patients (BMI > 29.3 kg/m2) has increased significantly. Obesity paradox does not exist in terms of readmission of Chinese patients with myocardial infarction after PCI. PMID: 32148951 [PubMed]

Conclusions: Dapagliflozin decreased the incidence of reported episodes of AF/AFL adverse events in high-risk patients with T2DM. This effect was consistent regardless of the patients' prior history of AF, ASCVD, or HF. Clinical Trial Registration: URL: https://clinicaltrials.gov Unique Identifier: NCT01730534.
