Comorbidity and the increased mortality after hospitalization for stroke: a population-based cohort study.
CONCLUSION: Comorbidity, notably cancer and advanced renal or liver disease, increased one-year mortality after stroke beyond the combined effects expected from either disease acting alone. Preadmission use of Glucocorticoids and Risk of Cardiovascular Events in Patients with Ischemic Stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: During the first year after ischemic stroke, current glucocorticoid use was associated with moderately increased risk of myocardial infarction and venous thromboembolism and lower risk of hemorrhagic stroke, while the risk of recurrent ischemic stroke was not affected. Inherited Thrombophilia and the Risk of Arterial Ischemic Stroke: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Conclusions: Our results suggest that inherited thrombophilias including FVL, PTM, PCD, and PSD are associated with an increased risk of arterial ischemic stroke, particularly in young patients. The association with FVL and PTM is stronger in the homozygous than in the heterozygous state, suggesting a potential dose-response relationship and causal role for inherited thrombophilias. Comparison of risk of serious cardiovascular events after haemorrhagic versus ischaemic stroke: a population-based study

Outcome of overt stroke in sickle cell anaemia, a single institution's experience
Summary Stroke is a traumatic complication in sickle cell anaemia (SCA) that is associated with significant morbidity and a risk of recurrent overt stroke of 2·2–6·4 events per 100 patient‐years. A retrospective study was performed on all paediatric SCA patients diagnosed with a history of overt stroke between 1997 and 2010. A total of 31 children with SCA had new onset overt stroke. Association of mean platelet volume and platelet count with the development and prognosis of ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: Increased MPV is an independent risk factor for both strokes. Elevated PLT count increases the risk for ischemic stroke, but decreases the risk for hemorrhagic stroke. Risk of stroke in patients with newly diagnosed multiple myeloma: a retrospective cohort study
This study includes consecutive patients 20 years and older who were newly diagnosed with symptomatic multiple myeloma at Taipei Veterans General Hospital, a tertiary medical center, between January 1, 2002 and December 31, 2014. The primary outcome was stroke development. Patients with head injuries, brain tumors, brain parenchymal invasions, or antecedent malignancies were excluded.
