Association of education and feedback on hypertension management with risk for stroke and cardiovascular disease
CONCLUSIONS: This study does not support an association between education and feedback on hypertension management to primary care physicians and the risk for stroke or cardiovascular outcomes. The observed differences for mortality outcomes should be interpreted with caution.PMID:35179089 | DOI:10.1080/08037051.2022.2041393

Factor VIII in the Setting of Acute Ischemic Stroke Among Patients With Suspected Hypercoagulable State
Conclusions: High factor VIII level was found in the majority of tested patients with AIS. Several baseline differences were found between patients with normal and high factor VIII levels, but no differences were identified in outcome.

Prognostic impact of increased pulse pressure/stroke index in a registry of hypertensive patients: the Campania Salute Network.
CONCLUSIONS: In treated hypertensive patients, high PP/SVi predicted increased rate of MACE, independent of common confounders. PMID: 31068016 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Interactive Effects of a Combination of the HDAC3 and HDAC9 Genes with Diabetes Mellitus on the Risk of Ischemic Stroke.
CONCLUSION:  Our results suggested that the combination of the HDAC3 and HDAC9 genes with a history of diabetes mellitus could exacerbate the deterioration of atherosclerosis, thereby increasing the risk of IS. Further studies are warranted to explore our results in other populations. PMID: 32961570 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The pleiotropic effect of rs7903146 on type 2 diabetes and ischemic stroke: a family-based study in a Chinese population
In conclusion, our study provided evidence that a T2D-independent path was identified out of the pleiotropic effect of rs7903146 on IS. However, further studies were needed to validate the biological mechanisms behind the pleiotropic effect and the modification by l ifestyle intervention.

Traditional risk factors and combined genetic markers of recurrent ischemic stroke in adults
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that cumulative effect of both traditional and common genetic risk factors were associated with recurrence of ischemic stroke. We demonstrated for the first time that a combined genotype FVL/MTHFR profile increase the risk of a second cerebral ischemic attack.PMID:34241942 | DOI:10.1111/jth.15448

No evidence for a J-shaped curve in treated hypertensive patients with increased cardiovascular risk: The VALUE trial.
In conclusion, patients in BP strata ≥ 150/90 mmHg, but not patients in BP strata < 130/70 mmHg, were at increased risk for adverse outcomes in this hypertensive, high-risk population. Although benefit in preventing MI in relation to preventing stroke levels off for the lowest BPs, these data provide no support for a J-curve in the treatment of high-risk hypertensive patients . The increase in the ratio of MI to stroke with lower DBP indicates target organ heterogeneity in that the optimal on-treatment DBP for cerebroprotection is below that for cardioprotection. Rapid Decline in Kidney Function in Sickle Cell Disease
Conclusion:Rapid decline in eGFR is common in SCD. Use of ACE-I/ARB and history of stroke are associated with rapid decline in renal function. Rapid decline in eGFR is associated with an increased risk of death in SCD. Long-term studies are required to determine if therapies that may reduce loss of kidney function may decrease mortality in SCD.DisclosuresAtaga: Pfizer: Research Funding; Bioverativ: Honoraria, Membership on an entity's Board of Directors or advisory committees; Novartis Pharmaceuticals: Honoraria; Modus Therapeutics: Honoraria; Global Blood Therapeutics: Honoraria, Membership on an entity's Board of Directo...

Risks associated with discontinuation of oral anticoagulation in newly diagnosed patients with atrial fibrillation: Results from the GARFIELD-AF Registry
CONCLUSIONS: Patients who discontinued (n=3,114, 13.0%) had a higher risk (Hazard ratio [95% CI]) of all-cause death (1.62 [1.25-2.09]), stroke/systemic embolism (SE) (2.21 [1.42-3.44]) and myocardial infarction (MI) (1.85 [1.09-3.13]) than patients who did not, whether OAC was restarted or not. This higher risk of outcomes after discontinuation was similar for patients treated with vitamin K antagonists (VKA) and direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) (p for interactions range=0.145-0.778). Bleeding history (1.43 [1.14-1.80]), paroxysmal vs. persistent AF (1.15 [1.02-1.29]), emergency room care setting vs. office (1.37 [1.18-...

Upper limb arterial thromboembolism: A systematic review on incidence, risk factors, and prognosis including a meta‐analysis of risk‐modifying drugs
ConclusionsAge, female sex, AF, hypertension, diabetes, myocardial infarction, heart failure and stroke are most common risk factors for thromboembolectomy of the upper limb. The availability of NOAC holds promise in reducing the risk of systemic thromboembolism, but specific data are still limited.© 2013 International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis

Predictors of Anticoagulant Treatment in Patients With Nonvalvular Atrial Fibrillation: Results From Atrial Fibrillation in Turkey: Epidemiologic Registry
In this study, we demonstrated that stroke history, persistent/permanent AF, hypertension, DM, and left atrial diameter were positive predictors, whereas advanced age and heart failure were negative predictors of oral anticoagulant use in patients with nonvalvular AF.

Effectiveness and safety of apixaban vs. rivaroxaban in patients with atrial fibrillation and type 2 diabetes mellitus
CONCLUSIONS: Among patients with NVAF and T2DM, apixaban was associated with a similar risk of stroke, and a lower risk of major bleeding compared with rivaroxaban.PMID:35292949 | DOI:10.1055/a-1798-2116
