Transplants give Garden Plain man a second chance at life
Chris Simon’s bucket list wasn’t anything fancy.
He simply wanted to be able to ride a bike again. Or take a swim. Or go camping with friends.
“Stuff I used to do all the time,” Simon said. “And all of a sudden it was taken away.”

Evaluation of cardiac output by bioreactance technique in patients undergoing liver transplantation.
CONCLUSIONS: NICOM provided a comparable CI and SVI trend when compared to the gold standard PiCCO, but it raises concerns as an effective CO monitor because of its tendency to overestimate CI and SVI especially during the state of high cardiac output.

Evaluation of pleth variability index as a predictor of fluid responsiveness during orthotopic liver transplantation
This study was designed to examine whether the PVI can reliably predict fluid responsiveness in OLT and to compare PVI with other hemodynamic indexes that are measured using the PiCCO2 monitoring system. Twenty-five patients were enrolled in this study. Each patient was monitored using the noninvasive Masimo and PiCCO2 monitoring system. PVI was obtained with a Masimo pulse oximeter. Transmission of Balamuthia mandrillaris by Organ Transplantation
Conclusions. Balamuthia can be transmitted through organ transplantation with an observed incubation time of 17–24 days. Clinicians should be aware of Balamuthia as a cause of encephalitis with high rate of fatality, and should notify public health departments and evaluate transplant recipients from donors with signs of possible encephalitis to facilitate early diagnosis and targeted treatment. The Role of the Model of End-Stage Liver Disease Score in Predicting Outcomes of Carotid Endarterectomy
Conclusion:
High MELD score places asymptomatic patients undergoing carotid endarterectomy at a higher risk of adverse outcomes in the 30 days following surgery. This provides further empirical evidence for risk stratification when considering treatment for these patients. Outcomes of medical management or carotid stenting should be investigated in high-risk patients.

Chronic hepatothorax due to right diaphragmatic rupture: an anesthetic challenge in a rare case
Conclusions Hepatothorax is a rare condition and its repair may represent an anesthetic challenge. After liver replacement in the abdominal cavity during corrective surgery under general anesthesia complications may occur, particularly associated with pulmonary re-expansion. Effective teamwork and careful planning of surgery, between the surgical and anesthetic teams, are the key to success.

Outcomes in patients with diabetes 10 years after liver transplantation
ConclusionsIn our study, diabetes was associated with a higher risk of liver graft rejection and cardiovascular events. There was also a trend to higher mortality, although the effect was not statistically significant. These findings suggest that patients with diabetes require a more rigorous pretransplant evaluation and closer monitoring after transplantation, in order to try to reduce associated complications.

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is the most common hereditary form of kidney disease. Clinical data on this multisystem disorder are scarce from developing countries. We conducted a prospective observational study of the clinical profile of ADPKD patients at a single center over a period of six years. A total of 208 patients were studied. Prognostic value of perioperative assessment of plasma cardiac troponin I in patients undergoing liver transplantation.
CONCLUSION: value of cTnI level assessed 24 hours post-surgery was a reliable predictor of death following LTx with optimal cut-off value of 0.215 ng/mL. The surgery time was the most important predictor of cTnI elevation.
