FUS aggregation following ischemic stroke favors brain astrocyte activation through inducing excessive autophagy
In conclusion, our results reveal the important contribution of FUS aggregates in promoting astrocyte activation in stroke pathology independent of its transcriptional regulation activity. We thus propose that aggregation of FUS is an important pathological process in ischemic stroke and targeting FUS aggregates might be of unique therapeutic value in the development of future treatment strategies for ischemic stroke.PMID:35718207 | DOI:10.1016/j.expneurol.2022.114144

Acute Ischemic Stroke Due to Undifferentiated Sarcoma: A Case Report and Literature Review.
Authors: Fukami Y, Yamaguchi K, Miyasaki A, Negoro M Abstract Tumor emboli due to a sarcoma are usually confirmed by an autopsy or operative findings. A sarcoma embolus in an acute stroke patient is rare. We herein report a 37-year-old man with acute stroke caused by internal carotid artery occlusion who underwent embolectomy. A histopathological analysis of an embolus obtained with a mechanical retriever device was diagnosed as undifferentiated sarcoma. This is the first case of extracardiac sarcoma extraction via mechanical retrieval performed during intervention for acute ischemic stroke. A histopathologic evalu...

Metastatic undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma causing intraoperative stroke.
We report a case of a dedifferentiated liposarcoma that metastasized to the lung within one year. The histologic morphology of the metastasis was more aggressive than the primary lesion, and was consistent with a pleomorphic undifferentiated sarcoma. Following surgical resection of the metastatic pulmonary lesion, the patient never fully regained consciousness. He expired the day following his surgery. At autopsy, the patient was found to have died from a massive hemorrhagic stroke involving almost the entire left cerebrum. Tumor emboli from the pulmonary metastasis were seen in the left middle cerebral artery, causing the...

Acute stroke from tumor embolus in a patient with cardiac sarcoma: Aspiration thrombectomy with Penumbra catheter.
Authors: Byon JH, Kwak HS, Chung GH, Jang KY Abstract The most common primary malignant cardiac tumor is the cardiac sarcoma, which is mesenchymal in origin. This case report describes a patient with hyperacute stroke caused by cardiac sarcoma who underwent rapid recanalization through mechanical aspiration thrombectomy with Penumbra catheter. Biological Plausibility of a Link Between Arterial Ischemic Stroke and Infection with Varicella-Zoster Virus or Herpes Simplex Virus.
Abstract There are now 9 human herpesviruses; the increase from 8 to 9 was caused by a recent decision to split human herpesvirus (HHV) strains 6A and 6B into distinct species. The 9 species are subdivided into three subfamilies, called alpha: herpes simplex virus (HSV) types 1 and 2 and varicella-zoster virus (VZV); beta: cytomegalovirus (CMV), HHV6A, HHV6B and HHV7; gamma: Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (sometimes called HHV8). These same herpesviruses have evolved with humankind around the world since the great migration of modern humans across the Mandeb Strait out of Afri...

Primary aortic sarcoma: A rare but critical cause of stroke
A 64-year-old woman with an aortic mass experienced repeated recurrences of stroke (figure 1) and died 8 months later. The postmortem examination showed the tumor to almost completely obstruct the aortic lumen, while extending to the intracranial arteries without parenchymal invasion (figure 2). The pathologic diagnosis was undifferentiated aortic intimal sarcoma. Primary aortic sarcoma is a rare and aggressive tumor, with clinical symptoms including acute arterial embolism and disseminated metastasis.1 Although arch atheroma is sometimes identified as a cause of cerebral emboli,2 this case shows that primary aortic sarcom...

Investigation into the potential mechanism and molecular targets of Fufang Xueshuantong capsule for the treatment of ischemic stroke based on network pharmacology and molecular docking
Fufang Xueshuantong (FFXST) capsule is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) preparation used to activate blood circulation, resolve stasis, benefit qi, and nourish yin in clinical practice. However, its potential mechanism and molecular targets after ischemic stroke (IS) have not been investigated. The aim of this research was to investigate the molecular mechanisms of FFXST in the treatment of IS based on network pharmacology and molecular docking. We used the Traditional Chinese Medicine Systems Pharmacology Database and Analysis Platform (TCMSP) to collect candidate compounds of four herbs in FFXST; disease-related diff...

Aortic Sarcoma Mimicking a Thrombus Filling Vascular Lumen: A Rare Cause of Cerebral Infarction (P4.364)
Conclusion- Primary aortic sarcoma is an extremely rare cause of stroke. This sarcoma may be misinterpreted as a thrombus filling vascular lumen on CT angiography, but no elevation of D-dimer is incompatible with a large thrombus. The final diagnosis can be made by surgical biopsy.Disclosure: Dr. Kim has nothing to disclose. Dr. Jeon has nothing to disclose. Dr. Park has nothing to disclose. Dr. Kim has nothing to disclose. Carotid Intimal Sarcoma Presenting as Large Vessel Occlusion and Diagnosed by Embolus Histopathology: Case Report
We report the case of a patient who presented with acute embolic ischemic stroke and was found to have IS based on a histopathologic evaluation of his embolectomy specimen. Subsequent comprehensive imaging studies failed to detect a primary tumor site. Multidisciplinary interventions including a course of radiotherapy were performed. The patient died of recurrent multifocal strokes 92 days after diagnosis. Discussion Meticulous histopathologic analysis should be conducted on cerebral embolectomy specimens. Histopathology may be useful in diagnosing IS.

Drugs to be offered to women at high risk of breast cancer
The National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has today released updated guidelines on the care of women who are at increased risk of breast cancer due to their family history. One of the main changes to the original guidance from 2004 is that NICE now recommends drug treatment with tamoxifen or raloxifene to reduce risk of breast cancer in a specific group of women who are at high risk of breast cancer and have not had the disease. They say that these treatments could help prevent breast cancer in about 488,000 women aged 35 years and older. The updated guideline has also made changes to the recommende...

Primary cardiac tumors: 32 years of experience from a Spanish tertiary surgical center
Conclusions: In our study, primary cardiac tumors were insidious. The most common was left atrial myxoma in which surgical resection was considered curative. Undifferentiated sarcoma was the most frequent malignant tumor. Malignant neoplasms carried a worse prognosis with unsuccessful total excision and the presence of metastatic disease being markers of an adverse outcome.

Does Thoracoscopic Surgery Decrease the Morbidity of Combined Lung and Chest Wall Resection?
Conclusions Thoracoscopic chest wall resection was feasible, expanded our case selection, and reduced prosthetic reconstruction. It did not, however, protect frail, elderly patients reliably. Briefer, less traumatic operations may be needed for this cohort.
