Is the Use of r-tPA in Mild Stroke Patients Cost-Effective? (P3.104)
CONCLUSIONS: Economic analyses based on preliminary clinical data suggest that r-tPA could be cost saving or highly cost-effective in the treatment of mild patients. Controlled clinical trials will be valuable in definitively establishing the clinical and economic value of r-tPA in mild stroke.Study Supported by: Genentech Inc.Disclosure: Dr. Guzauskas has received personal compensation for activities with Genentech, Inc. Blood pressure control and risk profile in poststroke survivors: a comparison with the general population
Conclusion: We found a high prevalence and poor control of major cardiovascular risk factors in patients surviving their first-ever ischemic stroke, thus showing poor implementation of guidelines for secondary prevention in clinical practice.

Economic impact of patients admitted to stroke units in Spain
Conclusions The cost of patients admitted to stroke units in Spain is €27,711 per patient/year. More than two-thirds are social costs, mainly informal care. Stroke remains a major burden on health systems and society, so additional efforts are needed for its prevention.

Caregiver-mediated exercises for improving outcomes after stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: There is very low- to moderate-quality evidence that CME may be a valuable intervention to augment the pallet of therapeutic options for stroke rehabilitation. Included studies were small, heterogeneous, and some trials had an unclear or high risk of bias. Future high-quality research should determine whether CME interventions are (cost-)effective. The impact of ischaemic stroke on atrial fibrillation-related healthcare cost: a systematic review
AbstractThe aim of this study was to summarize healthcare costs incurred by patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) who developed ischaemic stroke, explore factors associated with increased cost, and highlight the importance of anticoagulation therapy for stroke prophylaxis. A systematic literature search of PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and the health economic evaluation database was conducted up to December 2015. Studies focused on the cost and/or resource utilization of ischaemic stroke in patients with AF were included. Reported costs were converted to international dollars (I$) and adjusted to 2015 values. Alongside ...

The incidence of stroke in patients with early echocardiography after acute myocardial infarction
AbstractLeft ventricular (LV) thrombus formation after ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) increases the risk of stroke. In our center, most echocardiograms are performed within 2  days post-STEMI. However, LV thrombi often become visible later. We assessed the 1-year incidence of stroke in patients without LV thrombus on echocardiography performed early (1–2 days) vs. later (day ≥ 3) post-STEMI. This retrospective observational study included 416 patients with acut e STEMI. Patients with atrial fibrillation were excluded. All patients underwent echocardiography during admission. Patients with stroke withi...

P-006 The 'hub-spoke telemedicine model in a large cohort of stroke patients
ConclusionTele-stroke networks have proven to be a pivotal development in the treatment of strokes, especially those that are remote. With the additional expertise and the shorter duration from onset to diagnosis to treatment, these networks have substantially improved patient care and decreased healthcare costs, avoiding unnecessary transfers from spoke hospitals to hub.Abstract P-006 Figure 1Abstract P-006 Figure 2Disclosures K. IJERPH, Vol. 19, Pages 12959: Exploring the Need for Mobile Application in Stroke Management by Informal Caregivers: A Qualitative Study
Conclusions: The current study revealed two themes with respective subthemes that were identified, namely, self-seeking for information and reasons for using a stroke mobile application in the future. This application helps in reducing healthcare costs, enhancing the rehabilitation process, facilitating patient engagement in decision making, and the continuous monitoring of patient health.

E-129 nihss assessment during the stroke hospitalization is a significant predictor of 90-day functional outcome in the natural history of acute ischemic stroke from large vessel occlusion
ConclusionNIHSS at 24 h and at 7 days or discharge had a strong correlation with 90-day functional outcome. This study provides invaluable information for stroke physicians to be able to prognosticate when they talk to patients and family members at the end of hospitalization. In addition, this landmark study will help recruitment and completion of future medical device trials on stroke patients much faster and cost-effectively, thereby bringing down healthcare costs and facilitating newer medical devices for stroke treatment to become available to patients sooner.Abstract E-129 Table 1Correlation between ASPECTS and NIHSS...

Impaired Nutritional Condition After Stroke From the Hyperacute to the Chronic Phase: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
ConclusionINC and malnutrition are highly prevalent in all stages of stroke care. Since malnutrition has been shown to negatively affect clinical outcomes, mortality, and overall healthcare expenditure in stroke survivors, it is essential to examine and monitor the nutritional status of stroke patients throughout their care journey to guide and plan, timely nutritional support and dietary modification.

Drivers of healthcare costs in patients with ischaemic stroke: a hospital-based retrospective cohort study
Conclusion The number of admitted days was the most important driver of costs in all subgroups of patients with ischaemic stroke. This implicates that to reduce healthcare costs for patients who had a stroke, focus should be on reducing length of hospital stay.

Prediction Model of Early Return to Hospital after Discharge Following Acute Ischemic Stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: Although CART analysis did not improve the prediction of an early return to hospital after stroke compared with logistic regression models, decision rules generated by CART can easily be interpreted and applied in clinical practice. PMID: 31544716 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

EP51* Burden of tough to retrieve clots in acute ischemic stroke: clinical and economic impact of increasing retrieval attempts in mechanical thrombectomy
ConclusionOdds of achieving good outcomes decline with MT passes, while care costs increase. Thrombectomy devices that improve interaction with tough clots for rapid and complete retrieval in fewer passes may improve clinical and economic outcomes.ReferencesYoo AJ.
