Upstream Stimulating Factor 1 (USF-1) Gene Polymorphisms and the Risk, Symptoms, and Outcome of Pediatric Ischemic Stroke
Pediatric ischemic stroke is an important cause of morbidity and mortality. As previous studies of children after stroke showed, dyslipidemias were very common in Polish and other European populations. Thus, looking for genetic factors predisposing to pediatric stroke, its symptoms, and outcome, we have analyzed 2 polymorphisms of the upstream stimulating factor 1 (USF-1) gene.

BOLD fMRI signal in stroke patients and its importance for prognosis in the subacute disease period – Preliminary report
Conclusion There are differences observed in the activation areas of the cerebral cortex both in the stroke and non-stroke hemispheres of the brain in stroke patients. More than half of the patients with hemispheric stroke but all with good outcome showed cerebellar activation. There was no clear correlation between the cortical activation pattern and the neurological status on the first day of stroke. There is probable positive correlation between the size of BOLD-signal in fMRI, young age, activation of supplementary motor area in stroke hemisphere and good functional status of patients in the subacute period of stroke.

Are Depression and Dementia a Common Problem for Stroke Older Adults? A Review of Chosen Epidemiological Studies
AbstractStroke is the second leading cause of death in the world. It is often associated with various long-term physical and neuropsychological consequences. The aim of this article is to present the results of research on the occurrence of dementia and post-stroke depression. Using the keywords: post-stroke dementia, post-stroke depression, post-stroke cognitive impairment, stroke, Polish and foreign bibliographic databases were searched: PubMed, Science Direct, Wiley, Google Scholar. Documents that met the eligibility criteria were selected for inclusion in this review. After the conducted analyses, 7 Polish articles and...

Post‐stroke epilepsy in Polish paediatric patients
AimThe aim of this study was to characterize a group of children with early and late remote seizures which occurred after arterial ischaemic stroke (AIS) and to find predictors of post‐stroke seizures. MethodThe study group, recruited in the Department of Neuropediatrics (Medical University of Silesia, Katowice, Poland), comprised 78 patients who had had a stroke: 13 patients had early seizures occurring up to 7 days after the stroke, seven patients had late remote seizures occurring more than 7 days after the stroke, and 58 patients had no seizure. Univariate log‐rank tests and Cox proportional hazard models were us...

Return to work after stroke and related factors in Poland and abroad: A literature review.
CONCLUSIONS: The findings from studies included in this narrative review may suggest a need to improve the situation in Poland with regard to measures related to return to work after stroke, including vocational rehabilitation which is insufficiently available in Poland. Risk factors for death by acute ischaemic stroke in patients from West-Pomerania, Poland.
CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Older age, female sex, dyslipidemia, hypertension, coronary heart disease, and smoking are not only recognised risk factors for ischaemic stroke, but also risk factors associated with an unfavourable prognosis following stroke. Importance rating of risk factors of ischemic stroke in patients over 85 years old in the polish population.
CONCLUSION: The course of brain stroke in the Polish population is more severe in patients over 85 years old than in younger ones. The key risk factor in this group is atrial fibrillation. PMID: 29196059 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Characteristics of hospitalizations due to acute stroke in the Silesian Province, Poland, between 2009 and 2015.
CONCLUSIONS: This comprehensive long-term analysis of the epidemiological situation related to AS in the industrial region of Poland should encourage further development of educational and treatment programmes for improvement in the health status of the population. Stroke epidemiology based on experience from Krasnik county in eastern Poland.
CONCLUSIONS: Women aged around 78-years-old were the most likely to suffer a stroke. In men, it occurred eight years earlier. Despite residents of urban areas being hospitalised due to stroke more often, deaths caused by this disease were recorded the most frequently among rural residents. It can be concluded that primary stroke prevention is the only effective measure for reducing morbidity and premature mortality in the population. PMID: 32955229 [PubMed - in process]

Risk factors, types and outcomes of arterial ischemic stroke in Polish pediatric patients: a retrospective single-center study.
Conclusions: The presence and number of neurological outcomes depend on stroke subtypes. A relation between the presence of post-stroke deficits and age at onset was observed. The odds of deficit after ischemic stroke decreases by an average of 10.6% if the child is 1 year older at the time of AIS. PMID: 33488857 [PubMed]
