Evaluation of laser bacterial anti ‐fouling of transparent nanocrystalline yttria‐stabilized‐zirconia cranial implant
ConclusionsOur results show that E. coli biofilm formation across the thickness of the nc‐YSZ implant can be disrupted using NIR laser treatment. The results of this in vitro study suggest that using nc‐YSZ as a cranial implant in vivo may also allow for locally selective, non‐invasive, chronic treatment of bacterial layers (fouling) that might form under cranial implants, without causing adverse thermal damage to the underlying host tissue when appropriate laser parameters are used. Predicting the higher rate of intracranial hemorrhage in glioma patients receiving therapeutic enoxaparin
Venous thromboembolism occurs in up to one-third of patients with primary brain tumors. Spontaneous intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) is also a frequent occurrence in these patients, but there is limited data on the safety of therapeutic anticoagulation. Functional brain mapping: overview of techniques and their application to neurosurgery
This article reviews the physical principles, applications, merits, shortcomings, and latest developments of nine FBM techniques. Other than neurosurgical operations, these techniques have also been applied to studies of stroke, Alzheimer’s, and cognition. There are strong indications that the future of brain mapping shall see the non-invasive techniques playing a more dominant role as they become more sensitive and accurate due to advances in physics, refined algorithms, and subsequent validation against invas ive techniques.

Protective Effects of Alpha-Lipoic Acid on Glutamate-Induced Cytotoxicity in C6 Glioma Cells.
In this study, we investigated the protective effects of alpha-lipoic acid (ALA), a naturally occurring thiol antioxidant, on glutamate-induced cytotoxicity in cultured C6 astroglial cells. Exposure to high-dose glutamate (10 mM) caused oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction through the elevation of reactive oxygen species, depletion of glutathione, and loss of the mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm). Study unveils a blueprint for treating a deadly brain tumor
(NIH/National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke) In a study of mice and human brain tumors researchers at the University of the Michigan, Ann Arbor, searched for new treatments by exploring the reasons why some patients with gliomas live remarkably longer than others. The results suggested that certain patients' tumor cells are less aggressive and much better at repairing DNA than others but are difficult to kill with radiation. The researchers then showed that combining radiation therapy with cancer drugs designed to block DNA repair may be an effective treatment strategy.
