Improvement of survival in Polish stroke patients is related to reduced stroke severity and better control of risk factors: the Krakow Stroke Database.
CONCLUSIONS: Reduced stroke severity is associated with better recognition and control of risk factors and explains the improvement of survival in Polish stroke patients. PMID: 27279847 [PubMed]

Risk factors for death by acute ischaemic stroke in patients from West-Pomerania, Poland.
CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Older age, female sex, dyslipidemia, hypertension, coronary heart disease, and smoking are not only recognised risk factors for ischaemic stroke, but also risk factors associated with an unfavourable prognosis following stroke. Importance rating of risk factors of ischemic stroke in patients over 85 years old in the polish population.
CONCLUSION: The course of brain stroke in the Polish population is more severe in patients over 85 years old than in younger ones. The key risk factor in this group is atrial fibrillation. PMID: 29196059 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Prognostic significance of age in patients with acute ischaemic stroke treated with intravenous thrombolysis
CONCLUSIONS: AIS patients treated with reperfusion therapy and aged 80 or more have around a six times higher risk of an unfavourable outcome or death within three months of stroke onset compared to those aged below 60. Higher NIHSS score after IVT, any signs of disability before stroke as measured with mRS, and higher CRP levels are independent risk factors for worse prognosis in the elderly.PMID:35060614 | DOI:10.5603/PJNNS.a2022.0010

Anticoagulation and antiplatelet therapy for stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation patients in clinical practice of district hospital in Poland.
CONCLUSIONS: (1). Despite of high stroke risk determined by both scales only 39% of patients received OAC. (2). In the analyzed material the independent predictive factor in this group for prescribing OAC at discharge was arterial hypertension (in accordance with recommendations) and: the younger patients age, no history of stroke/TIA and other than paroxysmal type of AF. (3). Practice of the usage of OAC and/or antiplatelet therapy in AF patients discharged from Polish district hospital was in concordance with current guidelines of ESC neither in 2006 nor 2010. Mechanical thrombectomy for acute ischaemic stroke during therapeutic anticoagulation: long-term outcomes.
CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: In anticoagulated patients with AIS, MT does not affect long-term outcomes. PMID: 33202029 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Sex-related differences among ischaemic stroke patients treated with intravenous thrombolysis in Poland.
CONCLUSIONS: Of the ischaemic stroke patients treated with intravenous thrombolysis, women had worse long-term outcomes than men. This discrepancy may be explained by the older age and higher proportion of cardio-embolic strokes with more severe baseline deficits. However, multiple logistic analysis did not show that sex itself had an impact on the greater mortality in women after a stroke, or on the poorer prognosis. Stroke and TIA mimics in patients referred to a neurological emergency department by non-ambulance physicians, ambulance physicians and paramedics.
CONCLUSIONS: There seem to be no major differences in the structure, early diagnostic approach and management of ACE mimics between referrals from ambulance physicians and ambulance paramedics, which provides reassurance to the healthcare systems that rely solely on paramedics. Mimics referred by non-ambulance physicians appear different in structure and less resource consuming. PMID: 30614515 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Any type of physical exercise is good for the heart
Conclusion This study shows that all physical activity, in any form, is good for us. This includes both recreational and non-recreational activities. Don't be misled by some of the media: non-recreational activities like housework are not "better" than recreational activities like playing sports or going to the gym. The fact that reduced risk was seen with non-recreational activity across all countries, but only seen with recreational activity in high-income countries was probably just because fewer people in lower-income countries play sports or go to the gym. The researchers estimate that 8% of all deaths and...

Malignant middle cerebral artery (MCA) infarction in people over 85 years old – Diagnosis, management and risk factors
Conclusion The key risk factor in this group is the atrial fibrillation. The elderly patients require an intensive monitoring of the health condition by reference to brain stroke risk factors, especially atrial fibrillation.

Periodontal Disease Is Associated With Increased Risk of Hypertension: A Cross-Sectional Study
Conclusion: Periodontal disease is significantly and positively correlated with increased risk of hypertension in Chinese population, and exact mechanisms of this association should be explored in future. Introduction Periodontal disease is a complex polymicrobial inflammation, including gingivitis and periodontitis. According to the 2015 Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study, the prevalence of severe chronic periodontitis in 2015 has reached 616 million (Kassebaum et al., 2017). In China, the periodontal disease standardized DALYs rate has risen from 24.7 in 1990 to 25.7 in 2013 according to the data from 2013 GBD ...
