Safety of COVID-19 Vaccines among Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: Real-World Data Analysis
CONCLUSION: Careful monitoring of severe AEs in patients with T2DM may be necessary, especially for those related to thrombotic events and neurological dysfunctions after COVID-19 vaccination.PMID:36872064 | DOI:10.4093/dmj.2022.0129

Cardiovascular Effects of COVID-19
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a dramatic impact on the care of patients with cardiovascular disease throughout the world. COVID-19 has a myriad of direct effects on the myocardium, vasculature, and coagulation cascade, related to the proinflammatory and prothrombotic effects of the virus, leading to an increased risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, deep venous thrombosis, and pulmonary emboli within the first 2 to 4 weeks of contracting the disease (Fig.  1).1–4

Paradoxical Emboli as a Cause of Stroke
We present two cases of PDE resulting in acute ischemic events. A 63-year-old female presented for evaluation of left upper extremity numbness. Imaging was significant for an acute right middle cerebral artery infarct and evidence of a large saddle pulmonary embolism. The patient's stroke was postulated to have been secondary to a patent foramen ovale (PFO). An 87-year-old male presented for evaluation of chest pain. The patient underwent three-vessel CABG and experienced an acute left hemispheric stroke post-operatively. Transthoracic echocardiogram demonstrated a biatrial thrombus transversing a PFO and was postulated to...

Venous thromboembolism in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, based on nationwide claim data
CONCLUSION: Ischemic heart disease, ischemic stroke, and malignancy, especially lung cancer, were related to higher HR for VTE in IPF.PMID:36846942 | DOI:10.1177/17534666231155772

Colchicine and high-intensity rosuvastatin in the treatment of non-critically ill patients hospitalised with COVID-19: a randomised clinical trial
Conclusions In this small, open-label, randomised trial of non-critically ill hospitalised patients with COVID-19, the combination of colchicine and rosuvastatin in addition to standard of care did not appear to reduce the risk of progression of COVID-19 disease or thromboembolic events, although the trial was underpowered due to a lower-than-expected event rate. The trial leveraged the power of electronic medical records for efficiency and improved follow-up and demonstrates the utility of incorporating electronic medical records into future trials. Trial registration NCT04472611.

Recurrent thrombotic events after disappearance of antiphospholipid autoantibodies: A long-term longitudinal study in patients with antiphospholipid syndrome
Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is an autoimmune disease characterized by the occurrence of thrombosis and/or pregnancy morbidity related to the presence of persistent antiphospholipid autoantibodies (aPL) [1]. The most frequent clinical manifestations of APS are thrombotic events and death may be caused by stroke, myocardial infarction, pulmonary embolism or catastrophic APS [2]. APS treatment is based on long term anticoagulation [3].

Mechanical thrombectomy for acute paradoxical cerebral embolism due to pulmonary arteriovenous malformation: A case report and review of literature
CONCLUSION: Although rare, PAVM is a treatable cause of stroke in relatively young adults; thus, it is important to keep in mind the possibility of its presence.PMID:36751447 | PMC:PMC9899467 | DOI:10.25259/SNI_987_2022
