Social Determinants of Health and Cardiovascular Disease: Current State and Future Directions Towards Healthcare Equity
We examined existing evidence of the association between SDOH —organized into 6 domains, including economic stability, education, food, neighborhood and physical environment, healthcare system, and community and social context—and CVD. Greater social adversity, defined by adverse SDOH, was linked to higher burden of CVD risk factors and poor outcomes, such as stroke, myocardial infarction (MI), coronary heart disease, heart failure, and mortality. Conversely, favorable social conditions had protective effects on CVD.Upstream SDOH interact across domains to produce cumulativedownstream effects on CV health, via multiple...

Summary: International Kidney Cancer Symposium
Conclusions:  Ideal ischemia time is 20-25 minutes or less improves short and long term renal function. >25 minutes carried 5 year risk of new onset stage 4 CKD No differences on GFR for cold vs. warm ischemia times Preoperative GFR and the percent of kidney preserved was a better predictor of post op GFR.  No ischemia preserves renal function better than warm. Longer cold ischemia times were equivalent to shorter warm ischemia times. Quality and quantity of the remaining kidney is associated with ultimate renal function. Bone mineral density and risk of cardiovascular disease in men and women: the HUNT study
AbstractThe association between bone mineral density (BMD) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) is not fully understood. We evaluated BMD as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease and specifically atrial fibrillation (AF), acute myocardial infarction (AMI), ischemic (IS) and hemorrhagic stroke (HS) and heart failure (HF) in men and women. This prospective population cohort utilized data on 22 857 adults from the second and third surveys of the HUNT Study in Norway free from CVD at baseline. BMD was measured using single and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry in the non-dominant distal forearm and T-score was calculated. Hazard...

Rating the importance of outcomes from diabetes trials. A survey of patients ’ and doctors’ opinions
ConclusionThe current study suggest that patients and doctors weigh some diabetic outcomes used as part of composite endpoints in clinical diabetes trials differently. These findings call for more studies on patient reported outcomes and patient education for improved personal care.Highlights• We performed this study to assess how patients and practicing physicians rate the importance of outcomes commonly used in diabetes trials.• We found that patients and doctors rate the importance of some outcomes used in clinical diabetes trials differently.• These findings suggest that shared decision making is pivotal when tak...

Contemporary management of persistent atrial fibrillation
Learning objectives Develop a basic understanding of the underlying mechanisms of atrial fibrillation and classification of the disease. Review the main principles in contemporary management of atrial fibrillation with a focus on persistent atrial fibrillation. Discuss catheter ablation in the context of atrial fibrillation. Introduction Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a multisystemic disorder that is associated with an excess risk of stroke, heart failure and mortality.1 It remains the most common sustained arrhythmia and its significance should not be underestimated. Research focused on unveiling the mechanisms of AF began o...

Current prescription status of antihypertensive drugs in Chinese patients with hypertension: analysis by type of comorbidities
Clin Exp Hypertens. 2022 Jan 3:1-9. doi: 10.1080/10641963.2021.2022688. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn 2020, the National Center for Cardiovascular Diseases with National Committee on Hypertension Management in Primary Health Care in China issued revised national clinical practice guidelines on the management of hypertension in primary health care based on the 2018 Chinese guidelines for the management of hypertension. To evaluate adherence to the guidelines, this retrospective study assessed the real-world status of antihypertensive drug prescribing for Chinese patients with hypertension, classified by comorbidity: coro...

South Africa: North West Health On World Salt Awareness Week
[Govt of SA] The North West Department of Health urge communities to take actions during the World Salt Awareness Week which is marked on 14 - 20 March. The awareness is to educate members of the public that salt can damage their health and it is linked to serious health conditions such as stroke and heart failure. There is also increasing evidence supporting links between our current high salt diets and the onset of stomach cancer, osteoporosis, obesity and kidney stones and kidney disease.

Current applications and limitations of European guidelines on blood pressure measurement: implications for clinical practice
AbstractHypertension is the most common cardiovascular (CV) risk factor, strongly and independently associated with an increased risk of major CV outcomes, including myocardial infarction, stroke, congestive heart failure, renal disease and death due to CV causes. Effective control of hypertension is of key importance for reducing the risk of hypertension-related CV complications, as well as for reducing the global burden of CV mortality. However, several studies reported relatively poor rates of control of high blood pressure (BP) in a setting of real-life practice. To improve hypertension management and control, national...

Only 7% of Americans Have Optimal Heart Health, Study Says
Peak heart health is rare in the U.S.—and increasingly uncommon. A new study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology finds that fewer than 7% of all American adults have optimal health across five major areas related to heart and metabolic health: weight, blood sugar, blood pressure, cholesterol, and cardiovascular disease status. And the problem is getting worse. These five categories were adapted from the American Heart Association’s definition of ideal cardiovascular and metabolic health. The study, which analyzed National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data from more than 55,...

IJERPH, Vol. 19, Pages 8206: What Is or What Is Not a Risk Factor for Arterial Hypertension? Not Hamlet, but Medical Students Answer That Question
ne Oparil Hypertension is a leading cause of cardiovascular disease and premature death worldwide. The most important method of preventing hypertension is social awareness of its causes. An important role in educating society about hypertension is played by medical personnel. The study involved 327 students of medicine representing all years of study. The study used a proprietary questionnaire containing test questions about knowledge of the causes of hypertension (classical and non-classical factors), as well as questionable and false risk factors for the disease. The students’ knowledge of the complicat...
