Giant cell arteritis-related stroke in a large inception cohort: A comparative study
CONCLUSIONS: The location of stroke and assessment of ECU results and CRP level could help improve the prognosis of GCA-related stroke by bringing this condition to the clinician's attention more quickly, thus shortening diagnostic delay.PMID:35512621 | DOI:10.1016/j.semarthrit.2022.152020

Persistent headache after first-ever ischemic stroke: clinical characteristics and factors associated with its development
CONCLUSION: Persistent headache attributed to ischemic stroke is not rare and frequently leads to medication overuse. The problem is often neglected because of other serious consequences of stroke but actually, it has a considerable impact on quality of life. It should be a focus of interest in the follow-up of stroke patients.PMID:35978288 | DOI:10.1186/s10194-022-01479-9

Maternal Stroke: an Update
AbstractPurpose of the ReviewMaternal morbidity and mortality is rising in the USA, and maternal stroke is a major contributor. Here, we review the epidemiology, risk factors, and current recommendations for diagnosis and acute treatment of ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke during pregnancy and postpartum, focusing on recent evidence.Recent FindingsThe incidence of maternal stroke has risen in recent years, possibly due to increasing rates of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. The risk of maternal stroke is highest in the peripartum and early postpartum period. Preeclampsia is highly associated with reversible cerebral vas...

Migraine and the Risk for Stroke and Cardiovascular Disease
Abstract Numerous data have pointed to an association between migraine and cardiovascular diseases. The majority of the available data have indicated that migraine with aura can be considered a risk factor for ischemic stroke, whereas migraine without aura cannot be reliably considered as such. High frequency of attacks and a recent onset of migraine have been related to an increased ischemic stroke risk. In addition, in young subjects with ischemic stroke migraine with aura represents an independent risk factor of overall recurrent vascular events and of recurrent ischemic stroke. Also the risk of transient isch...

Stroke territory and atherosclerosis in ischemic stroke patients with a history of migraine with aura
DISCUSSION: Cryptogenic and cerebellar stroke and fewer vascular risk factors and clinical atherosclerosis seem to characterize stroke patients with MA.PMID:36923493 | PMC:PMC10008946 | DOI:10.3389/fneur.2023.1142424

Predictors of Long-Term Recurrent Vascular Events after Ischemic Stroke at Young Age: The Italian Project on Stroke in Young Adults.
CONCLUSIONS: Among patients with IS aged 18 to 45 years, the long-term risk of recurrent thrombotic events is associated with modifiable, age-specific, risk factors. The IPSYS score may serve as a simple tool for risk estimation. PMID: 24508827 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Maternal Stroke: A Call for Action.
Abstract Maternal mortality rates have been steadily increasing in the United States, and cardiovascular mortality is the leading cause of death among pregnant and postpartum women. Maternal stroke accounts for a significant burden of cardiovascular mortality. Data suggest that rates of maternal stroke have been increasing in recent years. Advancing maternal age at the time of birth and the increasing prevalence of traditional cardiovascular risk factors, and other risk factors, as well, such as hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, migraine, and infections, may contribute to increased rates of maternal stroke. In ...

Ischemic Stroke in Young Adults Caused by Cervical Artery Dissection —A Retrospective Study
Conclusions Dissection of cervical or intracranial artery is an important cause of ischemic stroke, especially in young adults. Therefore, it should be considered in young adults with presentation of stroke who lack traditional and modifiable risk factors. Migraine and large artery atherosclerosis in young adults with ischemic stroke
CONCLUSION: In this study of young adults with ischemic stroke, migraine had a negative association with LAA. This negative association was independent of traditional vascular risk factors and was found for both MWA and MWoA.PMID:35122432 | DOI:10.1111/head.14265

Influence of transcatheter closure of atrial communication on migraine headache in patients with ischemic stroke
Abstract Some types of migraine are associated with ischemic stroke. Although a right-to-left communication is linked with ischemic stroke, a causal relationship between migraine and right-to-left communication remains unclear. Furthermore, the efficacy of transcatheter closure of atrial communication on migraine is controversial. We aimed to evaluate the influence of transcatheter closure of atrial communication on migraine in patients with ischemic stroke. Thirty-eight consecutive patients with ischemic stroke who underwent transcatheter closure of atrial communication were enrolled. The prevalence, frequency, a...

Cardiac papillary fibroelastoma and stroke during pregnancy: Case report.
We report the case of a woman with severe headache associated with visual disturbances, without hypertension or proteinuria at 32 weeks of pregnancy. MRI revealed multiple recent cerebral vascular accidents. An echocardiogram detected a papillary fibroelastoma of 5mm. Maternal fetal experts determined it safe to continue the pregnancy. Childbirth at 39 weeks was normal uneventful for the newborn and mother. In the postpartum, despite the theoretical operative indication to resect the small residual papillary fibroelastoma, the patient was followed expectantly because of the stable neuro-cardiologic state. A fibroelastoma c...

Acute ischemic stroke what is hidden behind?
We present a case of a 58-year-old male patient that presented to ED with sudden onset of headache and left-sided hemiparesis, computed tomography (CT) demonstrated an ischemic stroke of the right middle cerebral artery. When the question of whether to start r-TPA or mechanical thrombectomy was discussed, a cardiac point-of-care ultrasound was performed in ED and showed a type A aortic dissection; immediately a CT aortic angiogram was performed and confirmed the diagnosis. The patient was taken to theater and had a favorable outcome. <Learning objective: Acute aortic dissection (AAD) may present as acute ischemic st...

Difficulty of stroke management in the dialysis child
ConclusionCause or consequences of the renal disease, HT must be properly treated in order to reach the recommended targeted blood pressure values. The time required to take charge the hypertensive stroke determines the prognosis. The challenge is to optimize the health care sector to reduce mortality and sequelae.

Patent foramen ovale closure for secondary prevention of cryptogenic stroke.
Authors: Kolte D, Palacios IF Abstract Introduction: A patent foramen ovale (PFO) is highly prevalent among the adult population. It allows shunting of blood through the inter-atrial septum and has been associated with cryptogenic stroke, transient ischemic attack, platypnea-orthodeoxia syndrome, decompression sickness (e.g. deep-water divers), and migraines. Areas Covered: In this manuscript, we will review the anatomy of PFO with particular emphasis on the factors associated with increased risk of paradoxical embolization, as well as the different modalities for the diagnosis of PFO. We will discuss medical, surg...
