Clinical and Demographic Characteristics Associated With Suboptimal Primary Stroke and Transient Ischemic Attack Prevention Clinical Sciences
Conclusions—Knowing the patient characteristics predictive of missed opportunities for stroke prevention may help primary care identify and appropriately manage these patients. Improving the management of these groups may reduce their risk and potentially prevent large number of future strokes and TIAs in the population.

Effect of High-Dose Atorvastatin on Renal Function in Subjects With Stroke or Transient Ischemic Attack in the SPARCL Trial Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— This post hoc analysis suggests that atorvastatin treatment may improve renal function in patients with prior stroke or transient ischemic attack with and without chronic kidney disease, and that atorvastatin treatment may prevent eGFR decline in patients with stroke and diabetes mellitus. Importance of Considering Competing Risks in Time-to-Event Analyses: Application to Stroke Risk in a Retrospective Cohort Study of Elderly Patients With Atrial Fibrillation Original Articles
Conclusions: The incidence of death without stroke was 9-fold higher than that of stroke, leading to biased estimates of stroke risk with traditional time-to-event methods. Statistical methods that appropriately account for competing risks should be used to mitigate this bias.

Conclusions— Proteinuria and albuminuria are better predictors of stroke risk in patients with chronic kidney disease than estimated glomerular filtration rate. The impact of therapies targeting proteinuria/albuminuria in individuals with chronic kidney disease on stroke prevention warrants further investigation.

Clinical Features and Functional Outcome of Stroke After Transient Ischemic Attack
Conclusions: Atherothrombotic stroke with concomitant vascular risk factors were more frequent in the stroke patients with than without previous TIA. Antithrombotic therapy was conducted only in one-third of the patients even after TIA. The stroke patients with history of TIA were at great risk of disabling stroke.

Gender Difference in Stroke Case Fatality: An Integrated Study of Hospitalization and Mortality
Conclusions: Among persons hospitalized with a stroke in Nebraska between 2005 and 2009, the crude case fatality rate was 50% higher in women. However, after accounting for age and other variables, adjusted mortality rates were essentially the same for men and women.

Routine troponin measurements are unnecessary in acute ischemic stroke evaluations (P4.285)

Increased risk of stroke in patients with chronic kidney disease after recurrent hypoglycemia
Conclusions: CKD was associated with a higher risk of stroke and mortality in patients with hypoglycemia. Recurrent hypoglycemia considerably increased the risk of stroke and overall mortality in patients with CKD regardless of whether they had diabetes. These results suggest that hypoglycemia has a crucial role in stroke and death in patients with CKD.
