Impact of the preoperative body mass index on the postoperative outcomes in patients with completely resected non-small cell lung cancer: A retrospective analysis of 16,503 cases in a Japanese Lung Cancer Registry Study
Obesity is responsible for multiple chronic diseases, including type 2 diabetes, hypertension, coronary artery disease, stroke, and several types of cancer [1]. The body mass index (BMI) —as an easy-to obtain, acceptable proxy for thinness and fatness—has been found to be associated with health risk and death in many populations. According to the World Health Organization definition, the normal range of BMI is defined as 18.5 to

Alcohol intake reduction for controlling hypertension.
CONCLUSIONS: An intervention for decreasing alcohol intake consumption did not result in differences in systolic and diastolic blood pressure when compared with a control intervention, although there was a reduction in alcohol intake favouring the active intervention. No differences were found either for overall mortality, cardiovascular mortality or cardiovascular events. No data on serious adverse events or quality of life were available to assess. Adequate randomised controlled trials are needed to provide additional evidence on this specific question. PMID: 32960976 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Cochrane in partnership: The World Health Organisation (WHO) Decade of Healthy Ageing
In 2020, people aged 60 years or over outnumber children under 5 years, for the first time in history; and by 2050, it is estimated that there will be more than twice as many people over 60 as children under 5, and outnumber adolescents and young people aged 15 –24 years. To mark this change in our global population The World Health Organisation (WHO)Decade of Healthy Ageing has been established. The WHO defines Healthy Ageing as ‘the process of developing and maintaining the functional ability that enables wellbeing in older age’ and includes creating environments and opportunities for people to be and do what they v...

Food as Prevention – Rising to Nutritional Challenges
Mothers and their children gather at a community nutrition centre in the little village of Rantolava, Madagascar, to learn more about a healthy diet. Credit: Alain Rakotondravony/IPSBy Gabriele RiccardiNAPLES, Italy, Nov 25 2020 (IPS) The risks factors contributing to the dramatic rise in non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in recent decades have been known for a long time but the Covid-19 pandemic has brutally exposed our collective failure to deal with them. Reporting on the findings of the latest Global Burden of Disease Study, The Lancet warns of a “perfect storm” created by the interaction of the highly infectious C...

(Ultra-)long-acting insulin analogues for people with type 1 diabetes mellitus
CONCLUSIONS: Comparing insulin detemir with NPH insulin for T1DM showed lower risk of severe hypoglycaemia in favour of insulin detemir (moderate-certainty evidence). However, the 95% prediction interval indicated inconsistency in this finding. Both insulin detemir and insulin glargine compared with NPH insulin did not show benefits or harms for severe nocturnal hypoglycaemia. For all other main outcomes with overall low risk of bias and comparing insulin analogues with each other, there was no true beneficial or harmful effect for any intervention. Data on patient-important outcomes such as QoL, macrovascular and microvas...

Hybrid artificial fish particle swarm optimizer and kernel extreme learning machine for type-II diabetes predictive model
AbstractThe World Health Organization(WHO) estimated that in 2016, 1.6 million deaths caused were due to diabetes. Precise and on-time diagnosis of type-II diabetes is crucial to reduce the risk of various diseases such as heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, diabetic retinopathy, diabetic neuropathy, and macrovascular problems. The non-invasive methods like machine learning are reliable and efficient in classifying the people subjected to type-II diabetics risk and healthy people into two different categories. This present study aims to develop a stacking-based integrated kernel extreme learning machine (KELM) model for...

Sexual hormones and diabetes: The impact of estradiol in pancreatic beta cell
Int Rev Cell Mol Biol. 2021;359:81-138. doi: 10.1016/bs.ircmb.2021.02.004. Epub 2021 Mar 16.ABSTRACTDiabetes is one of the most prevalent metabolic diseases and its incidence is increasing throughout the world. Data from World Health Organization (WHO) point-out that diabetes is a major cause of blindness, kidney failure, heart attacks, stroke and lower limb amputation and estimated 1.6 million deaths were directly caused by it in 2016. Population studies show that the incidence of this disease increases in women after menopause, when the production of estrogen is decreasing in them. Knowing the impact that estrogenic sign...
