Dizziness, Falls, and Hearing Loss in Adults Living With Sickle Cell Disease
DISCUSSION: These results provide justification for patient and health care provider education regarding appropriate referrals for vestibular/balance assessments and provision of fall prevention strategies. Future studies on balance and SCD are encouraged.PMID:36251873 | DOI:10.1044/2022_AJA-22-00059

Risk of stroke in multiple sclerosis and neuromyelitis optic spectrum disorder: a Nationwide cohort study in South Korea
Conclusions The risk of stroke is increased in patients with MS and NMOSD and seemed comparable between the two conditions. This is the first study that estimates the risk of stroke in patients with MS and NMOSD within the same population.

IJERPH, Vol. 19, Pages 13108: Correlation between Endophthalmitis and Stroke Development in Ankylosing Spondylitis Patients: A Population-Based Cohort Study
Conclusions: Our studies showed that endophthalmitis increases the risk of stroke in AS patients and endophthalmitis is an independent risk factor for stroke in AS patients. Nonetheless, advanced studies that thoroughly investigate the correlation between endophthalmitis and stroke in AS patients are needed to validate our findings.

Long-term Outcomes of Concomitant Surgical Ablation for Atrial Fibrillation
CONCLUSIONS: Concomitant atrial fibrillation ablation during cardiac surgery is safe, does not increase the rate of perioperative complications, and confers the benefit of long-term survival after cardiac surgery in adults. Atrial fibrillation ablation also improved cardiac surgery patients' long-term survival compared with the matched general atrial fibrillation population.PMID:36216085 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2022.09.036

Long-Term Effectiveness of Cilostazol in Patients with Hemodialysis with Peripheral Artery Disease
CONCLUSION: Continuous treatment of cilostazol in patients with HD with PAD significantly decreases the risk of ED visits, hemorrhagic stroke, and cardiovascular events and improves ED visit-free and cardiovascular event-free rates during long-term follow-up.PMID:36216573 | DOI:10.5551/jat.63404

IJERPH, Vol. 19, Pages 12916: Impact of Integrating Machine Learning in Comparative Effectiveness Research of Oral Anticoagulants in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation
Suh We aimed to compare the ability to balance baseline covariates and explore the impact of residual confounding between conventional and machine learning approaches to derive propensity scores (PS). The Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service database (January 2012–September 2019) was used. Patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) who initiated oral anticoagulants during July 2015–September 2018 were included. The outcome of interest was stroke/systemic embolism. To estimate PS, we used a logistic regression model (i.e., a conventional approach) and a generalized boosted model (GBM) w...

Association of long-term exposure to PM < sub > 2.5 < /sub > and survival following ischemic heart disease
CONCLUSION: Mortality from all-cause and cardiovascular disease following hospitalization due to ischemic heart disease was higher among individuals with greater PM2.5 exposure in seven major cities in South Korea. The result supports the association of long-term exposure to air pollution with poor prognosis among patients with ischemic heart disease.PMID:36208782 | DOI:10.1016/j.envres.2022.114440

Surveillance for Sickle Cell Disease - Sickle Cell Data Collection Program, Two States, 2004-2018
This report is the first comprehensive description of CDC's efforts in collaboration with participating states to establish, maintain, and expand SCD surveillance through the SCDC program to improve health outcomes for persons living with SCD. Findings from California and Georgia analyses highlighted a need for additional SCD specialty clinics. Despite different approaches, expansion of SCDC to multiple states was possible using standardized, rigorous methods developed across all participating states for reporting on disease prevalence, health care needs and use, and deaths.PUBLIC HEALTH ACTION: Findings from surveillance ...
