Imaging analysis of ischemic strokes due to blunt cerebrovascular injury
CONCLUSION With universal screening, CTA evidence of BCVI is common among blunt trauma patients. Although acute stroke is also relatively common in this population, two thirds of strokes are already evident on admission. One third of BCVI-related strokes occur after admission and often relatively early, necessitating rapid commencement of preventative treatment. Further studies are required to demonstrate the value of antithrombotic administration in preventing stroke in BCVI patients. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE Prognostic and Epidemiologic; Level IV.

Evaluation of antithrombotic use and COVID-19 outcomes in a nationwide atrial fibrillation cohort
Conclusions Pre-existing AT use may be associated with lower odds of COVID-19 death and, while not evidence of causality, provides further incentive to improve AT coverage for eligible individuals with AF.

Long-term exposure to ozone and cardiovascular mortality in a large Chinese cohort
CONCLUSIONS: We observed the association between long-term exposure to high O3 concentrations and cause-specific CVD mortality in China, independent of PM2.5 and other CVD risk factors. This suggested an urgent need to control O3 pollution, especially in developing countries.PMID:35605364 | DOI:10.1016/j.envint.2022.107280

Opioid-Use, COVID-19 Infection, and Their Neurological Implications
Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is an imminent threat to human health and public safety. ACE2 and transmembrane serine protease 2 proteins on host cells provide the viral entry point to SARS-CoV-2. Although SARS-CoV-2 mainly infects the respiratory system, there have been reports of viral neurotropism and central nervous system injury as indicated by plasma biomarkers, including neurofilament light chain protein and glial fibrillary acidic protein. Even with a small proportion of infections leading to neurological manifestation, the overall number remains high. Common neurological manifestation...

Relationship of diabetes, heart failure, and N ‐terminal pro‐B‐type natriuretic peptide with cardiovascular outcomes in patients with atrial fibrillation
ConclusionsDiabetes and HF were independently associated with an increased risk of CV death/HHF in an unselected AF patient population, and NT-proBNP improved risk assessment. These findings suggest that AF patients with diabetes and/or HF should be managed not only for their risk of stroke and systemic embolic events but also for CV death/HHF.

A Predictive Model for the Risk of Posterior Circulation Stroke in Patients with Intracranial Atherosclerosis Based on High Resolution MRI
Diagnostics (Basel). 2022 Mar 15;12(4):812. doi: 10.3390/diagnostics12040812.ABSTRACTIntracranial vertebrobasilar atherosclerosis is the main cause of posterior circulation ischemic stroke. We aimed to construct a predictive model for the risk of posterior circulation ischemic stroke in patients with posterior circulation atherosclerosis based on high-resolution MRI (HR-MRI). A total of 208 consecutive patients with posterior circulation atherosclerosis confirmed by HR-MRI, from January 2020 to July 2021, were retrospectively assessed. They were assigned to the posterior circulation stroke (49 patients) and non-posterior c...

Stroke and Ischemic Heart Disease With Enzyme-inducing Antiseizure Medications: Time to Change Prescribing Habits
Conclusions and Relevance: The hazard of incident cardiovascular disease is higher in those receiving eiASMs. The association is dose dependent and the absolute difference in hazard seems to reach clinical significance by approximately 10 years from first exposure.PMID:35444497 | PMC:PMC8988723 | DOI:10.1177/15357597211070392
