Cerebrovascular Reserve (CVR) and Stages of Hemodynamic Compromise
Adv Exp Med Biol. 2022;1395:363-366. doi: 10.1007/978-3-031-14190-4_59.ABSTRACTThe concept of hemodynamic compromise (HC) is used to detect brain regions under ischemic stress by impaired ability to dilate in response to a vasodilatory challenge for cerebrovascular reserve (CVR). The vasodilatory challenges are either inhaled CO2 or a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor acetazolamide (AZ) with measurements of cerebral blood flow (CBF) before and during the challenge. The rationale for CVR is that the brain under ischemic stress is vasodilated and the increase in CBF is attenuated. However, regional oxygen extraction fraction (OEF...

Diagnosis of Obstructive Sleep Apnea in Patients with Associated Comorbidity
Adv Exp Med Biol. 2022;1384:43-61. doi: 10.1007/978-3-031-06413-5_4.ABSTRACTObstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a heterogeneous disease with many physiological implications. OSA is associated with a great diversity of diseases, with which it shares common and very often bidirectional pathophysiological mechanisms, leading to significantly negative implications on morbidity and mortality. In these patients, underdiagnosis of OSA is high. Concerning cardiorespiratory comorbidities, several studies have assessed the usefulness of simplified screening tests for OSA in patients with hypertension, COPD, heart failure, atrial fibril...

An Overview on Sleep Medicine
Adv Exp Med Biol. 2022;1384:3-15. doi: 10.1007/978-3-031-06413-5_1.ABSTRACTSleep plays an important role in homeostasis, brain plasticity, clearance of neurotoxins, cognition, memory, concentration, performance, and the regulation of the temperature, endocrine and immunological systems. Insufficient, disorganized, and poor-quality sleep impacts performance, cognition, and safety, carries social and economic consequences and predisposes to obesity, excessive daytime sleepiness, fatigue, arterial hypertension, diabetes, stroke, coronary arterial disease, Alzheimer's disease, depression, and anxiety. Consequently, the search ...

Grading of Japanese Diet Intakes by 24-Hour Urine Analysis of Taurine and Soy Isoflavones in Relation to Cardiovascular Risks
In conclusion, the higher the J score, which corresponds to Japanese dietary habits, the lower the BMI and cholesterol levels, as well as mortality rate from coronary heart disease, but the higher the average life expectancy among the Japanese. However, these higher J scorings were associated with high-salt intake and high Na/K ratios; therefore, they contributed to high blood pressure and high mortality rate caused by stroke in Japan. These results indicate that low-salt intake should be recommended to the Japanese who are consuming seafood and soy regularly in order to maintain lower blood pressure and to extend healthy ...
