Gender differences in the age‐stratified prevalence of risk factors in Korean ischemic stroke patients: a nationwide stroke registry‐based cross‐sectional study
ConclusionKorean women with stroke had more hypertension and hyperlipidemia after middle age, more diabetes after 65 years, and more atrial fibrillation throughout all ages. Strategies to control risk factors in women at risk for stroke are eagerly needed.

Establishment of an effective acute stroke telemedicine program for Australia: protocol for the Victorian Stroke Telemedicine project
RationaleUrgent treatment of acute stroke in rural Australia is problematic partly because of limited access to medical specialists. Utilization of telemedicine could improve delivery of acute stroke treatments in rural communities. AimThe study aims to demonstrate enhanced clinical decision making for use of thrombolysis within 4·5 h of ischemic stroke symptom onset in a rural setting using a telemedicine specialist support model. DesignA formative program evaluation research design was used. The Victorian Stroke Telemedicine program was developed and will be evaluated over five stages to ensure successful implementati...

Review of lipid and lipoprotein(a) abnormalities in childhood arterial ischemic stroke
National organizations recommend cholesterol screening in children to prevent vascular disease in adulthood. There are currently no recommendations for cholesterol and lipoprotein (a) testing in children who experience an arterial ischemic stroke. While dyslipidemia and elevated lipoprotein (a) are associated with ischemic stroke in adults, the role of atherosclerotic risk factors in childhood arterial ischemic stroke is not known. A review of the literature was performed from 1966 to April 2012 to evaluate the association between childhood arterial ischemic stroke and dyslipidemia or elevated lipoprotein (a). Of 239 citat...

Exploration of time‐course combinations of outcome scales for use in a global test of stroke recovery
DiscussionWhen data concerning both early and late outcomes are combined into a global measure, there is increased sensitivity to treatment effect compared with solitary ordinal scales. This delivers a 20% reduction in required sample size at 80% power. Combining early with late outcomes merits further consideration.

Perfusion computed tomography thresholds defining ischemic penumbra and infarct core: studies in a rat stroke model
ConclusionsThe data provide perfusion computed tomography defined relative cerebral blood flow thresholds for infarct core and ischemic penumbra within the first two hours after experimental stroke in rats. These thresholds were shown to be stable to define the volume of infarct core and penumbra within this time window.

Depression: Cognition relations after stroke
ConclusionsThe rates of depression and cognitive impairment were in the range of previous stroke studies. Our study suggested a strong relation between depression and cognition characterized by executive functions and working memory dysfunctioning.

Translational perspectives on perfusion–diffusion mismatch in ischemic stroke
Magnetic resonance imaging has tremendous potential to illuminate ischemic stroke pathophysiology and guide rational treatment decisions. Clinical applications to date have been largely limited to trials. However, recent analyses of the major clinical studies have led to refinements in selection criteria and improved understanding of the potential implications for the risk vs. benefit of thrombolytic therapy. In parallel, preclinical studies have provided complementary information on the evolution of stroke that is difficult to obtain in humans due to the requirement for continuous or repeated imaging and pathological veri...

Plaque At RISK (PARISK): prospective multicenter study to improve diagnosis of high‐risk carotid plaques
BackgroundPatients with symptomatic carotid artery stenosis are at high risk for recurrent stroke. To date, the decision to perform carotid endarterectomy in patients with a recent cerebrovascular event is mainly based on degree of stenosis of the ipsilateral carotid artery. However, additional atherosclerotic plaque characteristics might be better predictors of stroke, allowing for more precise selection of patients for carotid endarterectomy. Aims and hypothesisWe investigate the hypothesis that the assessment of carotid plaque characteristics with magnetic resonance imaging, multidetector‐row computed tomography angio...

In‐hospital cardiac complications after intracerebral hemorrhage
ConclusionsAfter intracerebral hemorrhage, 4% of patients suffer an acute serious cardiac complication. Those with history of myocardial infarction or in‐hospital atrial fibrillation are at greater risk for such events.

Elevated thyroid autoantibodies and intracranial stenosis in stroke at an early age
ConclusionsThyroid autoantibodies may be associated with the presence of intracranial large artery stenosis in young stroke patients, potentially providing insight on immune pathogenesis of intracranial large artery stenosis.

Predictors of in‐hospital death and symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage in patients with acute ischemic stroke treated with thrombolytic therapy: Paul Coverdell Acute Stroke Registry 2008–2012
ConclusionsIn this study of acute ischemic stroke patients, older age, male gender, National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score, history of myocardial infarction or coronary artery disease, and history of atrial fibrillation were associated with increased in‐hospital death among patients receiving intravenous tissue plasminogen activator. Among patients treated with intravenous tissue plasminogen activator, in‐hospital mortality and symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage rates were similar between those treated within three‐hours of time last known to be well and those treated between three and 4·5 hours after this time.

Short‐duration hypothermia after ischemic stroke prevents delayed intracranial pressure rise
ConclusionsWe saw major intracranial pressure elevation 24 h after stroke in two rat strains, even after small strokes. Short‐duration hypothermia prevented the intracranial pressure rise, an effect sustained for at least 18 h after rewarming. The findings have potentially important implications for design of future clinical trials.

Program for the epidemiological evaluation of stroke in Tandil, Argentina (PREVISTA) study: rationale and design
The availability of population‐based epidemiological data on the incident risk of stroke is very scarce in Argentina and other Latin American countries. In response to the priorities established by the World Health Organization and the United Nations, PREVISTA was envisaged as a population‐based program to determine the risk of first‐ever and recurrent stroke and transient ischemic attack incidence and mortality in Tandil, Buenos Aires, Argentina. The study will be conducted according to Standardized Tools for Stroke Surveillance (STEPS Stroke) methodology and will enroll all new (incident) and recurrent consecutive ...
