Association of survival and hyperthermia after rt ‐PA for ischemic stroke
ConclusionsHyperthermia within 3  days after rt‐PA is associated with poor functional prognosis and survival outcome in patients with acute cerebral infarction.

Predictors of progression in patients presenting with minor subcortical stroke
ConclusionIn a series of consecutive SS, early neurological worsening was associated with a high vascular risk profile, a larger infarct size and the presence of severe leukoaraiosis. Based on the knowledge that extensive microvascular changes are a feature of severe leukoaraiosis, we hypothesize that stroke progression could be promoted through an impaired compensatory flow in the penumbral area.

Comparison of upright balance in stroke, Parkinson and multiple sclerosis
The objective of the study was to assess the impact of MS, PD and ST on upright posture in eyes open condition and when visual and/or proprioceptive inputs are altered. Materials and methodsA total of 188 subjects with MS (n = 80), PD (n = 58) and ST (n = 50), mean age (SD), 57.9 (14.6) years, and 32 healthy subjects (HS) aged 53.7 (15.7) years were assessed by a stabilometric platform in a cross‐sectional study. ResultsCompared to HS, MS showed large deviations from normal performances with respect to magnitude (P < 0.001) and regularity (P < 0.05) of body sway irrespective of the altered sensory informa...

Association of hepatitis B virus infection with decreased ischemic stroke
ConclusionHBV was correlated with a reduced risk of AIS development. Although a decrease in AIS risk was noted in the patients with HBV, preventing the development of AIS in this population warrants further attention.

Post‐stroke restless leg syndrome and periodic limb movements in sleep
ConclusionsThe observed differences in the clinical and radiological features of psRLS and psPLMS suggest that the pathophysiologies of the two conditions are distinct. Further research is needed to understand the pathophysiologies of primary RLS and PLMS.

Retraction statement: Dynamics of Cytochrome C Oxidase Activity in Acute Ischemic Stroke ’ by Selaković, V.M., Jovanović, M.D., Mihajlović, R.R. and Radenović, L.L.J.
The above article from Acta Neurologica Scandinavica, published online on 7 April 2005 in Wiley Online Library (wileyonlinelibrary.com) and in Volume 111, pp. 329‐332, has been retracted by agreement between the journal Editor in Chief, Professor Elinor Ben‐Menachem, and John Wiley & Sons Ltd. The article has been retracted because a similar article had previously been published in the Jugoslovenska medicinska biohemija in 2003. The authors presumed that since the journal was no longer existing, they felt the need to re‐publish their work in Acta Neuorologica Scandinavica. However, in the consideration of the Jou...

Depression but not anxiety predicts recurrent cerebrovascular events
ConclusionsDepression occurring early after stroke was associated with the increased risk of recurrent cerebrovascular events in ischemic stroke survivors. Care plan to detect and manage depression should be implemented to prevent recurrent stroke.

Lower hazard ratio for death in women with cerebral hemorrhage
ConclusionWe evaluated HR for death comparing men to women in stroke and in each stroke subtype. Women with CH had lower HR for death within 30 days after stroke than men.

Small vessel disease and clinical outcomes after IV rt ‐PA treatment
ConclusionOur results suggest that SVD negatively affects stroke outcomes after intravenous thrombolysis. Although white matter changes seem to be the major driver in relation to worse outcomes, global estimation of SVD is feasible and may provide helpful information.

Serial NIHSS scores in patients with acute cerebral infarction
ConclusionOur study demonstrates a hyperacute phase with rapid improvement probably due to early recanalization, an acute phase with no significant improvement and slow improvement in the subacute phase. Different pathophysiological mechanisms are likely involved in the different phases.

Changing clinical patterns and increasing prevalence in CADASIL
ConclusionsCADASIL prevalence is at least 4.6 per 100,000 adults. Median age of first stroke may be older than previously thought. Clinicians should consider CADASIL in the differential diagnosis even in older patients with stroke.

Multiple variant type thalamic infarcts: pure and combined types
ConclusionsWe described multiple variant topographic patterns of thalamic infarction with distinct manifestations and etiologies. We thought that multiple variant infarcts are the result of variation in thalamic arterial supply or reflect a source of embolism.

Is the search for right‐to‐left shunt still worthwhile?
ConclusionsIn addition to recently defined criteria, genetically determined inheritable traits and epidemiologic characteristics (male gender) should be taken into account when assessing PFO and related cerebrovascular risk profile. A newly defined threshold in TCCD MB count is suggested to discriminate shunts related to stroke and TIA from innocent ones.

Clinical consequences of aspirin and clopidogrel resistance: an overview
The aim of this review is to introduce the concept of personalized medicine in secondary stroke prevention with antiplatelet medication. In the last years, many studies have been conducted regarding aspirin resistance and genotyping of clopidogrel metabolism. A review of the currently published data on this issue emphasizes the importance of focusing on the individualizing approach in antiplatelet therapy to achieve maximal therapeutic beneficial effect. However, many authors suggest that, before new information from ongoing trials become available, good clinical practice should dictate the use of low dose of aspirin that ...
