Is type 2 diabetes related to leukoaraiosis? an updated review
A significantly increased interest has been dedicated to the study of the effects of diabetes mellitus (DM) on the brain. DM is associated with an increased risk of stroke and cognitive decline. In patients with DM, neuroimaging discloses with high‐frequency structural changes, such as cerebral atrophy, infarcts and white matter lesions, also called leukoaraiosis (LA), an expression of small vessel disease. A previous review showed a relation between DM and both cerebral atrophy and lacunar infarcts, while the question about the relation between DM and LA remained unanswered. In this review, we provide an update on data ...

C‐reactive protein levels are associated with cerebral small vessel‐related lesions
ConclusionsHigher levels of hs‐CRP were associated with lacunar infarcts. Thus, inflammatory processes may be involved in the pathogenesis of small‐vessel disease.

CSF tau correlates with CJD disease severity and cognitive decline
ConclusionThe correlation between tau levels and the disease severity and degree of cognitive decline in patients with fCJD suggests that tau can be a biomarker reflecting the extent of neuronal damage.

Serum soluble CD40 ligand levels after acute intracerebral hemorrhage
ConclusionsElevated serum sCD40L levels are independently associated with ICH severity and clinical outcomes. And sCD40L has potential to be a good prognostic biomarker of ICH.

Cardiovascular risk factors and TIA characteristics in 19,872 Swedish TIA patients
ConclusionsThe fact that diabetes mellitus, atrial fibrillation, and smoking are more common in TIA patients than in the general population suggests that these factors are risk factors for TIA, even if causal relations cannot be proven. The relation between increasing age and longer attacks possibly reflects an increased proportion of embolic TIAs, or impaired recovery ability. Our results also suggest a significant proportion of untreated hypertension cases in the population.

Effect of carotid endarterectomy on brain damage markers
ConclusionsData from our study showed that CEA affects serum YKL‐40 but not NEFL and FABP7 levels. This implicates that YKL‐40 may be a valuable serum marker of brain damage after CEA. However, the observed change in serum YKL‐40 level in patients after CEA does not necessarily warrant a change in recommendations concerning the use of this treatment in patients with high‐grade internal carotid artery stenosis.

Regional disparities in botulinum toxin A (BoNT‐A) therapy for spasticity in Sweden: budgetary consequences of closing the estimated treatment gap
ConclusionsThe study revealed apparent regional disparities of BoNT‐A treatment for spasticity in Sweden. The results further suggest that the incremental cost of eliminating the treatment gap has a high probability of being offset by savings in direct costs, even at a low proportion of the patients reaching clinical improvement.

Less thrombolysis in posterior circulation infarction—a necessary evil?
ConclusionsOur study is, to our knowledge, the largest series reporting comprehensively on PCI verified by diffusion‐weighted imaging. PCI patients are younger than ACI and have better outcome. PCI and ACI are equally investigated in the acute setting, but thrombolysis rates remain 50% lower in PCI.

Reversed aqueductal cerebrospinal fluid net flow in idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus
ConclusionsINPH patients present hyperdynamic flow with increased velocity and volume both in systole and diastole phase. Degree of rising in diastole phase exceeds that of systole phase. The resulting reversal of netflow direction may play a key role in the occurrence of ventriculomegaly in iNPH patients.

Accelerated atherosclerosis in ANCA ‐associated vasculitis
ConclusionsOur study adds weight to the presence of increased atherosclerosis in AAV‐patients. The association observed between CIMT and PI‐ICA with small vessel cerebral disease, points the possible association of easy to use carotid US in predicting microvascular brain injury.

Life situation 5  years after subarachnoid haemorrhage
ConclusionsIn this 5‐year follow‐up after SAH, the participants reported to have a greater number of hidden disabilities compared to physical problems, whereas most had acceptable participation in society. A yearly follow‐up after a SAH could be suggested aiming to improving the cognitive and mental health.
