Clinical predictors of fever in stroke patients: relevance of nasogastric tube
ConclusionsIn patients with acute stroke, four clinical variables were found to be independently associated with the risk of developing fever and, of them, nasogastric tube was the strongest and most significant one.

Nocturnal blood pressure dipping in acute ischemic stroke
ConclusionsNocturnal BP dipping pattern is not associated with functional outcome at 3 months in acute stroke patients treated with IVrtPA. Hemorrhagic transformation was more frequent in reverse dippers.

Addition of sodium criterion to SOAR stroke score
ConclusionThe SOAR‐Na did not perform considerably better than the SOAR stroke score. However, the performance of SOAR‐Na in those with CKD and dysglycaemias requires further investigation.

Impact of obstructive sleep apnea on neurological recovery after ischemic stroke: A prospective study
ConclusionIschemic stroke patients with OSA tend to have poor neurological and functional recovery, across all segments of stroke and OSA severity.

Risk of stroke after bereavement —a systematic literature review
Several studies have suggested that psychological stress may increase the risk of stroke. However, this link remains a controversial issue because of conflicting findings. Bereavement, the loss of a close relative, is considered a severely stressful life event. Increased risk of stroke could thus be expected after bereavement if stress plays a causal role. We aimed to evaluate the association between bereavement and stroke by performing a systematic review of the existing literature. The literature search was conducted according to the PRISMA guidelines for systematic reviews. A search in Medline and Embase identified elig...

Low ‐frequency rTMS of the unaffected hemisphere in stroke patients: A systematic review
The aim of this review was to summarize the evidence for the effectiveness of low‐frequency (LF) repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) over the unaffected hemisphere in promoting functional recovery after stroke. We performed a systematic search of the studies using LF‐rTMS over the contralesional hemisphere in stroke patients and reviewed the 67 identified articles. The studies have been gathered together according to the time interval that had elapsed between the stroke onset and the beginning of the rTMS treatment. Inhibitory rTMS of the contralesional hemisphere can induce beneficial effects on stroke...

Is carotid imaging underused in patients with transient ischemic attack or ischemic stroke? A Swedish Stroke Register (Riksstroke) study
ConclusionCarotid imaging appears to be underused in patients with TIA and IS. Opportunities of secondary stroke prevention with carotid interventions are likely missed.

Prehospital stroke scales and large vessel occlusion: A systematic review
ConclusionsThis meta‐analysis suggests that some prehospital scoring systems including cortical signs showed better accuracy to predict stroke due to LVO. However, the assessment of these signs could be difficult to investigate by paramedics and personnel of Emergency Medical Services, and for this reason, further prospective evaluations are needed.

Plasma copeptin and long‐term outcomes in acute ischemic stroke
ConclusionsCopeptin levels are a novel and complementary biomarker to predict functional outcome and mortality 1 year after acute ischemic stroke.

Diffusion‐weighted lesions in acute ischaemic stroke patients with migraine
ConclusionsMigraine was associated with small cortical infarctions. This association may be due to cortical spreading depression.

The frequency of alcohol consumption is associated with the stroke mortality
ConclusionsThis study shows a strong association between the frequency of alcohol consumption and stroke mortality, independent of total amount of alcohol consumption. The risk of stroke death was the highest among men who consumed alcohol >2.5 times per week.

Stroke service: How can we improve and measure outcomes? Consensus summary from a global stroke forum
The success of acute stroke treatment is first and foremost time‐dependent, and the need for improvement in acute stroke management is demonstrated by the fact that only a minority of patients gain access to treatment – in particular, intravenous recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (IV tPA) – within the necessary time window. Standards of acute stroke care vary widely both regionally and nationally; consequently, various healthcare organizations have undertaken initiatives to measure and improve quality of care. To date, most quality measures have been process‐based, focusing primarily on metrics of patient ca...

An open‐label evaluator‐blinded clinical study of minocycline neuroprotection in ischemic stroke: gender‐dependent effect
ConclusionPatients with ischemic stroke who received oral minocycline daily for 5 days had significantly better neurological outcomes on day 90 than controls. However, females showed no significant clinical improvement compared to males.

Regional cerebral blood flow following single‐dose and continuous‐dose tadalafil after stroke
ConclusionTadalafil administration after cerebral stroke may be associated with diminished blood flow to areas adjacent to the stroke. The alterations in perfusion suggest a need for caution in prescribing tadalafil to patients with a history of stroke, especially with continuous administration that may impose constant stress on the cerebral circulation.

Prognostic indices for early mortality in ischaemic stroke – meta‐analysis
ConclusionsOur meta‐analysis has identified and summarized the performance of several prognostic scores with modest to good predictive accuracy for early mortality in ischaemic stroke, with the iSCORE having the broadest evidence base.
