Glucose in prediabetic and diabetic range and outcome after stroke
ConclusionsPatients with glucose in the prediabetic and diabetic range have an increased risk of unfavourable short‐term outcome after stroke. These findings illustrate the potential impact of early detection and treatment of these patients.

Risks of atrial fibrillation and death at discharge after thrombolysis in stroke patients: Northumbrian Sentinel Stroke Audit, 2013–2015
ConclusionFor future research, clinical outcomes in addition to atrial fibrillation and quality of life both at discharge and 6 months after thrombolysis treatment should be included for examination as well. For clinical practice, giving thrombolysis treatment in hospitals might need to be reconsidered if clinical outcomes were actually worse than not.

Anemia and stroke: Where do we stand?
Anemia seems to have a clear relationship with cerebrovascular events (CVEs), as there is a direct connection between central nervous system, blood supply, and tissue oxygen delivery. Anemia is considered a hyperkinetic state which disturbs endothelial adhesion molecule genes that may lead to thrombus formation. Furthermore, blood flow augmentation and turbulence may result in the migration of this thrombus, thus producing artery‐to‐artery embolism. It is for this reason that anemia is characterized as “the fifth cardiovascular risk factor.” Anemia is consistently present in patients with acute stroke, ranging from...

Serum YKL ‐40, a prognostic marker in patients with large‐artery atherosclerotic stroke
ConclusionsThe level of serum YKL‐40 is a significant and independent biomarker to predict the clinical outcome of LAA stroke.

Acute ‐onset Restless legs syndrome in acute neurological conditions—a prospective study on patients with the Guillain‐Barre syndrome and acute stroke
ConclusionThis is the first study showing that acute‐onset RLS is common, affecting nearly 25% of patients with GBS and 10% patients with acute stroke. Recognizing and treating it can majorly contribute toward symptom relief and early improvement in the quality of life for this population.

Sex differences in stroke case fatality: a meta‐analysis
ConclusionsDue to the limited data about sex differences in stroke case fatality, the findings should be treated cautiously as preliminary. More large multicenter clinical trials should be performed to verify the reliability of the results.

Central nervous system infections and stroke – a population‐based analysis
ConclusionsThe population‐based cohort study suggested that adult patients with CNS infections have higher risk to develop stroke but not AMI, and the risk is marked within a year after infections.

Agreement between ambulance nurses and physicians in assessing stroke patients
ConclusionsAdditional tools to support ambulance nurses decisions appear to be required before suspected stroke patients can be taken directly to a CT scanner.

Predicting intracerebral hemorrhage by baseline magnetic resonance imaging in stroke patients undergoing systemic thrombolysis
ConclusionsIn ischemic stroke patients within 3 h from symptom onset, the existence of FLAIR‐positive lesions on pretreatment MRI is significantly associated with an increased bleeding risk due to systemic thrombolysis. Therefore, considering FLAIR‐positive lesions on baseline MRI might guide treatment decisions in ischemic stroke.

Correlation of post‐stroke fatigue with glucose, homocysteine and functional disability
ConclusionsThe serum glucose and Hcy levels and functional disability are closely related to fatigue during the acute stage of ischaemic stroke.

Early warning score predicts acute mortality in stroke patients
ConclusionsEarly warning score is a simple and valid tool for identifying patients at risk of dying after acute stroke. Readily available physiological parameters are converted to a single score, which can guide both nurses and physicians in clinical decision making and resource allocation.

Health outcomes and costs of ischemic stroke patients in Finland
ConclusionsStroke patients’ improved outcome is clear, but it remains uncertain to what extent it is attributable to the development of care. More research is needed to study the cost‐effectiveness of stroke care.

Acute ischemic stroke and abnormal blood hemoglobin concentration
ConclusionsOur results suggest that an elevated HGB on the initial admission is associated with more severe strokes, greater disability at discharge, and higher 30‐day mortality after AIS. A low HGB on admission is associated with longer stay in the acute care hospital.

Language improvement one week after thrombolysis in acute stroke
ConclusionsLesion size and initial aphasia severity are the main predictors of aphasia recovery one week after thrombolysis. A NIHSS composite verbal score seems to capture the global linguistic performance better than the language item alone.

Ultra ‐acute diagnostics for stroke: Large‐scale implementation of prehospital biomarker sampling
ConclusionsPrehospital biomarker sampling can be implemented in all EMS units and provides a median timesaving of more than 30 minutes to first blood sample. Large prehospital sample sets will enable development of novel ambulance biomarkers to improve early differential diagnosis and treatment of thrombolysis candidates.
