A comparison of stroke rehabilitation; data from two national cohorts
ConclusionsAlthough components of the rehabilitation are reported as being the same, characteristics and the outcome of the inpatient rehabilitation are different. Therefore, comparison of stroke rehabilitation between countries requires caution.

Musculoskeletal and central pain at 1 year post‐stroke: associated factors and impact on quality of life
ConclusionsPain is common 12 months post‐stroke. The factors associated with CPSP and MSP differ, but are both closely associated with fatigue rather than depression. QOL is the poorest in patients with combined pain. Management of pain and fatigue may be important for improving the QOL in stroke patients.

Subjective health complaints predict functional outcome six months after stroke
ConclusionsInitial stroke severity was the main predictor of functional outcome. Subjective health complaints score was a potent predictor for both outcome and improvement from baseline to 6 months and at the same time ameliorated the predictive impact of sex. The poorer functional prognosis for women after stroke may therefore be related to their higher load of subjective health complaints rather than to their sex itself. Treating these complaints may possibly improve the functional prognosis.

Ipsilateral hemiparesis in ischemic stroke patients
ConclusionsMost patients with ipsilateral hemiparesis had a past history of stroke contralateral to the recent one, resulting in motor deficits contralateral to the earlier lesions. Moreover, functional neuroimaging findings indicated an active crossed corticospinal tract in all of the examined patients. Both findings suggest the contribution of the uncrossed corticospinal tract contralateral to stroke lesions as a post‐stroke compensatory motor system.

The prognosis of stroke survivors primarily discharged to their homes
ConclusionsAlmost 90% of the stroke patients could be discharged to their homes, but they needed more often NHP in the long run than the stroke‐free controls. Stroke patients discharged to their homes were younger at the time of NHP and death indicating that the stroke deficit may contribute to increased morbidity and mortality in this patient group.

Prevalence and predictors of anxiety in an African sample of recent stroke survivors
ConclusionsOne in five recent stroke survivors in SSA has clinically significant anxiety, and well over 70% of those with anxiety also have depression. Future studies will need to determine what specific impact post‐stroke anxiety may have on post‐stroke clinical processes and outcomes.

Role of mHealth in overcoming the occurrence of post ‐stroke depression
This article proposes the rationale for a suitable evidence‐driven, mHealth‐based, PSD self‐management intervention called iMOODS—Investigating the role of mHealth in overcoming occurrence of depression after stroke—that could be tested among recent stroke patients with PSD in resource constrained settings.

Contrast ‐enhanced sonothrombolysis in acute ischemic stroke patients without intracranial large‐vessel occlusion
ConclusionCEST is safe in ischemic stroke patients without intracranial LVO. There were no differences in clinical outcomes between the treatment groups.

Use of paracetamol in ischaemic stroke patients: evidence from VISTA
ConclusionThis retrospective analysis is discouraging for prophylactic use of paracetamol in acute stroke patients, but underlines the need for a sufficiently powered randomized controlled trial.

Enhancing patient–provider communication for long‐term post‐stroke spasticity management
Stroke is a major public health concern, with estimated 16 million people worldwide experiencing first‐time strokes each year, a number that is expected to rise. Two‐thirds of those experiencing a stroke are younger than 70 years of age. Stroke is a leading cause of disability in adults as a result of major sequelae that include spasticity, cognitive impairment, paresis, and depression. Disabling spasticity, defined as spasticity severe enough to require intervention, occurs in 4% of stroke survivors within 1 year of first‐time stroke. The aim of this report is to focus instead on a discussion of patient–provider...

Relationship between endothelial nitric oxide synthase gene polymorphisms and ischemic stroke: a meta‐analysis
ConclusionsOur comprehensive meta‐analysis ascertains that the G894T, 4b/a, and T786C polymorphisms are associated with ischemic stroke risk in Asians. A possible contrasting role of the 4b/a polymorphism in ischemic stroke was indicated in white populations.

Stroke treated at a neurosurgical ward: a cohort study
ConclusionsPatients with stroke who were admitted to a neurosurgical ward had a low mortality rate during the acute treatment, and at 4 years post‐stroke, the survival rate was 75%. The level of disability and dependence at discharge was high, but at 4 years post‐stroke, there was both measurable and self‐perceived improvement in function.

Higher ratio of ischemic stroke to hemorrhagic stroke in summer
ConclusionsSeasonal variations differed among stroke subtypes. The OR for CH/CeI and for SAH/CeI was lower in summer and higher in the rest of seasons independent of age, gender, and risk factors.

Early neurological worsening in acute ischaemic stroke patients
ConclusionsEarly neurological worsening has serious consequences for the short‐term outcome for patients with acute ischaemic stroke and is associated with low body temperature on admission, and with extracranially and intracranially large‐vessel stenosis or occlusion.
