Lower birth weight is linked to poorer cardiovascular health in middle-aged population-based adults
Conclusions Lower birth weight was associated with greater risk of incident MI and unhealthy LV phenotypes; effects were partially mediated through cardiometabolic disease and systemic inflammation. These findings support consideration of birth weight in risk prediction and highlight actionable areas for disease prevention.

Prevalence, outcomes and costs of a contemporary, multinational population with heart failure
Conclusions We estimate that 1–2% of the contemporary adult population has HF. These individuals are at significant risk of adverse outcomes and associated costs, predominantly driven by hospitalisations for HF or CKD. There is considerable public health potential in understanding the contemporary burden of HF and the importance of optimising its management.

Prediction of incident atrial fibrillation with cardiac biomarkers and left atrial volumes
Conclusions In the general population, echocardiographic left atrial volumetric indices and NT-proBNP, but not cTnT and GDF-15, associate with prevalent atrial fibrillation and with risk of incident atrial fibrillation. cTnT and NT-proBNP provide incremental prognostic information to echocardiography.

Emergent readmission and long-term mortality risk after incident atrial fibrillation hospitalisation
Conclusion This study highlights the large burden of unplanned all-cause and cardiovascular-specific readmissions within 2 years after being hospitalised for incident AF and their associated adverse impact on mortality. Concomitant comorbidities are independently associated with unplanned hospitalisations and mortality, which supports integrated multidisciplinary management of comorbidities, along with AF-targeted treatments, to improve long-term outcomes in patients with AF.

Population-wide cohort study of statin use for the secondary cardiovascular disease prevention in Scotland in 2009-2017
Conclusions Statin use remains suboptimal for the secondary ASCVD prevention, particularly in women and older patients, and following ischaemic stroke and PAD hospitalisations. Improving this would offer substantial benefits to population health at low cost.

Early surgical intervention versus conservative management of asymptomatic severe aortic stenosis: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Conclusions This study suggests that for patients with asymptomatic severe AS an early surgical intervention compared with a conservative WW strategy was associated with a lower heart failure hospitalisation and a similar rate of stroke or myocardial infarction, although with significant risk of bias. Outcomes and drivers of inappropriate dosing of non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs) in patients with atrial fibrillation: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Conclusions Our analysis suggests that off-label underdosing of NOACs does not reduce bleeding outcomes. Patients prescribed off-label NOAC doses are at an increased risk of all-cause mortality. These data underscore the importance of prescriber adherence to NOAC dosing guidelines to achieve optimal clinical outcomes for patients with AF. PROSPERO registration number CRD42020219844.

Cardiovascular disease and mortality sequelae of COVID-19 in the UK Biobank
Conclusions Individuals hospitalised with COVID-19 have increased risk of incident cardiovascular events across a range of disease and mortality outcomes. The risk of most events is highest in the early postinfection period. Individuals not requiring hospitalisation have increased risk of VTE, but not of other cardiovascular-specific outcomes.

Transcatheter versus surgical closure of atrial septal defect in adult patients with tricuspid regurgitation
Conclusions While TAP was effective for the treatment of significant TR, transcatheter ASD closure also significantly reduced TR as well. Transcatheter ASD closure may be considered an alternative treatment option in patients with moderate or severe TR.

Left atrial appendage preservation versus closure during surgical ablation of atrial fibrillation
Conclusions LAA preservation during surgical AF ablation was not associated with an increased risk of stroke or mortality. Postoperative LA transport functions were more favourable with LAA preservation than with LAA closure.
