The Sky's the Limit: Expanding Nursing's Contribution to Acute Stroke Science
Am J Crit Care. 2022 Jul 1;31(4):266-274. doi: 10.4037/ajcc2022109.ABSTRACTStroke is the number one cause of preventable disability in adults in the United States. Significant advances have occurred in medications and technology supporting rapid stroke diagnosis and treatment during the past 30 years, along with blurring of the lines of what traditionally constituted nursing or medical research. Ischemic stroke is a disease of vascular insufficiency that mirrors myocardial infarction more than any other neurologic diagnosis. My primary program of research is focused on exploration of methods to improve intracranial blood f...

Predicting Transcarotid Artery Revascularization adverse outcomes by Imaging Characteristics
Approximately 20-30% of ischemic strokes are caused by internal carotid artery stenosis. Stroke is the leading cause of disability and the second leading cause of death in the United States. Second generation Trans Carotid Arterial Revascularization (TCAR) stenting, using the ENROUTE flow reversal technology to prevent embolic stroke during the stenting process, has demonstrated stroke and death outcomes equivalent to CEA with reduced cranial nerve injury. However, at present, it is not known whether imaging characteristics obtained pre-operatively can predict outcomes of TCAR procedures.

Pregnancy-Related Stroke: A Review
Conclusions and Relevance Early recognition and management are integral in decreasing the morbidity and mortality associated with a stroke in pregnancy. Relevance Statement This study was an evidence-based review of stroke in pregnancy and how to diagnose and mange a pregnancy complicated by a stroke. Target Audience Obstetricians and gynecologist, family physicians Learning Objectives After completing this learning activity, the participant should be better able to identify the pregnancy-related risk factors for a stroke; explain the presenting signs and symptoms of a stroke in pregnancy; describe...

Functional Recovery in Patients with Acute Stroke and Pre-Existing Disability: A Natural History Study
One million strokes occur in the United States every year, with as many as 1 in 3 occurring among patients with a pre-existing disability.1,2 Though they are a significant portion of the stroke population, such patients are often excluded from interventional trials.3-5 As a result, acute ischemic stroke patients with pre-morbid disability are often omitted from clinical practice treatment guidelines, such as for mechanical thrombectomy (MT). In the latest American Heart Association (AHA) guidelines, MT is only indicated for patients with no pre-stroke disability, as defined by a modified Rankin scale (mRS) score of 0-1.

Impact of disability diagnosis on dental care use  for adults in the United States: Status matters
CONCLUSIONS: Adults with IADDs have decreased access to oral health care compared with adults with other disabilities or without disabilities. The inability to afford oral health care lessens the impact of disability status.PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: Dentists can use this study to understand the implications of IADD diagnoses on dental care use and make efforts to facilitate care for these patients.PMID:35527037 | DOI:10.1016/j.adaj.2022.03.002

Mayo Clinic Minute: African Americans at higher risk of stroke
May is National Stroke Awareness Month. According to the CDC, a stroke occurs every 40 seconds in the U.S. Do you know that stroke is a leading cause of death and disability in the United States? A stroke happens when blood supply to the brain is interrupted or reduced, preventing brain tissue from getting oxygen and nutrients. This causes brain cells to become damaged or die. Risks of stroke vary by race and ethnicity. African American…
