Alf Brodal's stroke in 1972: A brilliant self-report by a neuroanatomy professor
Rev Neurol (Paris). 2022 Nov 5:S0035-3787(22)00779-2. doi: 10.1016/j.neurol.2022.06.015. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAlf Brodal (1910-1988) was a professor of anatomy at the University of Oslo, Norway, and the author of almost 200 articles and medical textbooks including Neurological Anatomy in Relation to Clinical Neurology. He suffered a right hemisphere embolic stroke during a lecture trip abroad in April 1972. In the following year, he described his own clinical picture and the recovery process in an article published in Brain, making insightful observations based on his vast neuroanatomical knowledge. His comments a...

Decompressive hemicraniectomy for space-occupying brain infarction: Nationwide population-based registry study
We analyzed data from the Norwegian Stroke Registry (NSR) to study access to and outcomes of decompressive hemicraniectomy for brain infarction in a nationwide routine clinical setting. We also discretionary assessed whether the outcomes were comparable with those achieved in randomized controlled trials (RCTs), and whether the use was in accordance with guidelines.

Gamification of the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) for simulation training-a feasibility study
CONCLUSION: Game-based digital simulation training is a feasible alternative to standard in-person simulation training to acquire competence in NIHSS assessment. Gamification seemed to give an incentive to simulate considerably more and to perform the assessment faster, with equal accuracy.TRIAL REGISTRATION: The study was approved by the Norwegian Centre for Research Data (reference no. 543238).PMID:36810284 | DOI:10.1186/s41077-023-00245-4

The Outcome of Status Epilepticus and Long-Term Follow-Up
Conclusion: This study highlights the importance of regular care and patient follow-up. Introduction Status epilepticus (SE) is a condition and most extreme form of epilepsy (1), which leads to abnormal and prolonged seizure (at least 5 min). In case SE persists over 30 min, it may have severe long-term consequences (2). Referring to the new classification scheme of SE, there are two operational dimensions of the definition: time point 1 (T1) is associated with abnormally prolonged seizure, when therapy should be initiated, while time point 2 (T2) is related to the time of on-going seizure activity involving a risk...

Hjerneslag i Norge 2015 –16 – behandling og resultater.
Hjerneslag i Norge 2015–16 – behandling og resultater. Tidsskr Nor Laegeforen. 2020 Feb 04;140(2): Authors: Varmdal T, Indredavik B, Phan A, Fjærtoft H Abstract BACKGROUND: Treatment of stroke in Norway is decentralised; patients with stroke are treated at 50 different hospitals. We have surveyed the treatment of stroke in these hospitals and collated this with data from the Norwegian Stroke Registry. We wished to investigate whether there was any variation in treatment interventions and treatment outcomes between university hospitals and local hospitals. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A questionnaire...

Veldig tidlig mobilisering ved akutt hjerneslag.
Abstract BACKGROUND: Since the first stroke units were established in the 1990s, early mobilisation has formed a key part of the acute treatment. In the context of an updating of national clinical guidelines for stroke, the Norwegian Directorate of Health commissioned the Institute of Public Health to prepare a systematic review of the efficacy and safety of very early mobilisation (within 24 hours) after stroke, compared with current practice, which is early mobilisation (within 48 hours). MATERIAL AND METHOD: We have written a systematic review based on a previous review from the Cochrane Collaboration publ...

Utredning av pasienter med akutt svimmelhet ved en nevrologisk avdeling.
Abstract BACKGROUND: Acute dizziness may have a number of causes, including cerebrovascular stroke which can present as isolated acute vestibular syndrome. It is recommended that acute episodic dizziness be assessed using positioning tests, and acute persistent dizziness with a focus on the HINTS (Head Impulse, Nystagmus, Test of Skew) battery of tests, which can distinguish cerebrovascular stroke from vestibular neuritis. We wished to identify the prevalence, diagnostic spectrum and approach to acute dizziness in a neurological department. MATERIAL AND METHOD: We undertook a retrospective review of the medic...

Effectiveness and safety of oral anticoagulants in elderly patients with atrial fibrillation
Conclusion In this nationwide cohort study of patients ≥75 years initiating oral anticoagulation for AF, standard and reduced dose NOACs were associated with similar risks of stroke/SE as warfarin and lower or similar risks of bleeding. The NOACs seem to be a safe option also in elderly patients.

Mortality and Morbidity Effects of Long-Term Exposure to Low-Level PM < sub > 2.5 < /sub > , BC, NO < sub > 2 < /sub > , and O < sub > 3 < /sub > : An Analysis of European Cohorts in the ELAPSE Project
CONCLUSIONS: Long-term exposure to PM2.5, NO2, and BC was positively associated with natural-cause and cause-specific mortality in the pooled cohort and the administrative cohorts. Associations were found well below current limit values and guidelines for PM2.5 and NO2. Associations tended to be supralinear, with steeper slopes at low exposures with no indication of a threshold. Two-pollutant models documented the importance of characterizing the ambient mixture with both NO2 and PM2.5. We mostly found negative associations with O3. In two-pollutant models with NO2, the negative associations with O3 were attenuated to esse...

Ethnobotany of Heracleum persicum Desf. ex Fisch., an invasive species in Norway, or how plant names, uses, and other traditions evolve
Conclusions: Over the years, H. persicum has accumulated at least twenty different vernacular names in Norway, and a variety of other traditions. By necessity, all these traditions are less than 180 years old, showing that even modern and urban societies may produce a substantial body of plant lore, which certainly merits ethnobotanical attention.
