When the cupboard is bare: Impact of low pay revealed by conference
On a busy opening day of UNISON’s women’s conference – held virtually because of the continuing pandemic – delegates worked hard to ensure they have every chance of getting through the entire agenda. Irene Graham from Northern Ireland told delegates about that region’s relaunch of the Feminist Recover Plan, which highlights the effects of both the pandemic and Brexit on women. Conference voted to support the region’s plan and called on the national committee to use it as a model to shape its future work. Describing the struggle low-paid women workers have to survive on “on the hamster wheel of life”, Laura ...

Atrial fibrillation (AF) pilot screening programme in primary care in Ireland: an implementation study protocol
This study aims to investigate the acceptability, feasibility and impact of AF screening in primary care using a handheld mobile ECG device. Methods and analysis General practitioners (GPs) and practice nurses in the South of Ireland will opportunistically screen patients aged ≥65 years for AF at routine consultation using a handheld one-lead ECG device, KardiaMobile. This study will screen up to 4000 patients. Blood pressure and smoking status will be checked concurrently. A mixed-method evaluation will be undertaken including a partial economic evaluation. Anonymised data will be collected from participating practice...

New Analyses Suggest Favorable Results for STELARA ® (ustekinumab) When Used as a First-Line Therapy for Bio-Naïve Patients with Moderately to Severely Active Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis
SPRING HOUSE, PENNSYLVANIA, October 25, 2021 – The Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson today announced data from two new analyses of STELARA® (ustekinumab) for the treatment of adults with moderately to severely active Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC).1,2 In a modelled analysisa focused on treatment sequencing using data from randomized controlled trials, network meta-analysis and literature, results showed patient time spent in clinical remission or response was highest when STELARA was used as a first-line advanced therapy for bio-naïve patients with moderately to severely acti...

Long non-coding RNA Plasmacytoma variant 1 in acute ischemic stroke: association with disease risk, severity, and recurrence-free survival and relation with inflammatory cytokines
ConclusionLnc-PVT1 not only correlates with AIS risk, inflammation, and disease severity, but also reveals a dependable value for AIS prognostication, which still needs further studies for validation.

Visual perceptual deficit screening in stroke survivors: evaluation of current practice in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland
CONCLUSIONS: Visual perceptual deficits are screened post-stroke at a similar rate to sensory vision or visual neglect. Underdiagnosis of visual perceptual deficits may stem from both reliance on subjective and non-standardised screening approaches, and conflicting definitions of visual perception held among clinicians. We recommend increased training provision and use of brief performance-based screening tools.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONLack of agreement among clinicians on what constitutes as visual perceptual or sensory vision deficits may prove problematic, as precise and exact language is often required for clinic...

EP47* Investigation of current and novel treatment strategies for ICA and MCA occlusions in an in-vitro thrombectomy model
ConclusionsThe novel 0.088’’ aspiration catheter achieves the best FPE rates in both ICA and MCA occlusions. In terms of existing techniques, ADAPT is more effective in the MCA, while the stentrievers provide a benefit in the ICA.ReferencesHafeez MU, Kan P, Srivatsan A, Moore S, Jafari M, DeLaGarza C, et al. EP51* Burden of tough to retrieve clots in acute ischemic stroke: clinical and economic impact of increasing retrieval attempts in mechanical thrombectomy
ConclusionOdds of achieving good outcomes decline with MT passes, while care costs increase. Thrombectomy devices that improve interaction with tough clots for rapid and complete retrieval in fewer passes may improve clinical and economic outcomes.ReferencesYoo AJ. Global cognitive performance at 4-year follow-up in individuals with atrial fibrillation —findings from The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing
ConclusionIndividuals with AF were more likely to show an increase in rate of errors between waves 1 and 3 (4-year follow-up period) in the TILDA population; however, results were not significant when controlling for age, sex and level of education.

Identifying patients with atrial fibrillation with a single CHA 2 DS 2 -VASC risk factor who are at higher risk of stroke
ConclusionPatients considered at low or intermediate risk using traditional risk stratification schemes, with  ≥ 2 points using this proposed low-risk index (65–74 years old, diabetics or a combination of chronic renal failure and an additional risk factor), had an overall stroke risk that may justify anticoagulation therapy.
