Clinical Characteristics of Borderzone Infarction in Egyptian Population
Objectives: In this research we wanted to highlight the importance of defining Borderzone infarctions (BZI) as a separate subtype in stroke classifications. We thus studied cases of isolated BZI, small vessel disease (SVD), and large vessel disease (LVD), to identify their points of similarities and difference in a sample of Egyptian patients. Methods: This is a cross-sectional (observational) study. Consecutive 637 acute ischemic stroke patients were recruited over a 2 year period, from 2 stroke units of Ain Shams University hospitals in Egypt.

Association between interleukin-18 (137G/C and 607C/A) gene polymorphisms and risk of ischemic stroke: a meta-analysis
Over the years, numerous researchers have explored the relationship between ischemic stroke (IS) and interleukin-18 (IL-18) gene polymorphisms. However, those studies reported conflicting and ambiguous results. The effects of IL-18 (137G/C and 607C/A) genetic variants on IS were investigated in this article. We performed a systematic search that was comprehensively executed in online databases for studies published up to 30 April 2018. Calculation of pooled odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals was applied to assess the intensity of correlation using Stata.12.0. The overall outcome showed that 137G allele increase...

XANTUS-EL: A real-world, prospective, observational study of patients treated with rivaroxaban for stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation in Eastern Europe, Middle East, Africa and Latin America
ConclusionsXANTUS-EL confirmed low stroke and major bleeding rates in patients with NVAF from EEMEA and Latin America. The population was younger but with more heart failure and hypertension than XANTUS; stroke/SE rate was similar but major bleeding lower.

Pharmacogenetic and clinical predictors of response to clopidogrel plus aspirin after acute coronary syndrome in Egyptians
Conclusion These results highlight that CYP2C19*2, along with diabetes, and use of proton pump inhibitor and statin are important factors jointly associated with variability in clinical response to DAPT following ACS in Egyptians.

Early post-stroke seizures in a sample of Egyptian patients with first-ever stroke
Conclusion: The incidence of early post-stroke seizures was high in our study and was positively associated with a poor functional outcome, a higher in-hospital mortality rate and a longer duration of in-hospital stay. The most important risk factors were ICH, the cortical site of involvement and a large size of the lesion.

Short term outcome of patients with hyperglycemia and acute stroke
ConclusionsHyperglycemia is associated with poor outcomes after acute stroke. History of HTN, admission glucose level ≥ 223 mg/dL and NIHSS ≥ 10 were predictors of worse stroke outcome.

The first reported case of acute ischemic stroke treated with tissue plasminogen activator at Mansoura University, Egypt
We report on the first case of acute ischemic stroke to be treated with rTPA at our University hospitals. She received rTPA 4 h and 20 min after the onset of symptoms despite the occurrence of stroke inside the hospital and the availability of rTPA. The patient showed partial improvement after 3 months. We hope that public and medical staff awareness as well as our developing experience relative to treatment of acute ischemic stroke would improve over time allowing for avoidance of long-term suffering of these patients.

Genetic study of the NOTCH3 gene in CADASIL patients
ConclusionWe found four novel mutations (P109T, P203H, IVS7 + 15A>G and IVS7 + 16A>G) and 2 reported NOTCH3 mutations. Exon 4 and Intron 7 are hotspots in the patients we examined with the NOTCH3 mutations. These findings broaden the mutational spectrum of CADASIL.

Subclinical myocardial dysfunction by tissue Doppler echocardiography in primary antiphospholipid syndrome: Preliminary results
ConclusionThe present study demonstrated subclinical myocardial dysfunction using TDI in asymptomatic PAPS patients. TDI is non-invasive and cost effective. Prospective studies including a large number of participants in order to confirm these preliminary data are needed.

Clinical safety profile of ticagrelor compared to clopidogrel in 1208 patients: Real world evidence
ConclusionIn the real world settings, patients undergoing PCI treated with ticagrelor showed similar safety profile compared to clopidogrel but with increase in minor bleeding rate. The observed results were in alignment with PLATO clinical trial.

Impact of elevated glycosylated hemoglobin on hospital outcome and 1 year survival of primary isolated coronary artery bypass grafting patients
ConclusionsThis study showed that HbA1c is a good predictor of in-hospital morbidity. It worth devoting time and effort to decrease HbA1c level below 7% to decrease possible postoperative complications.
