Necroptosis is one of the modalities of cell death accompanying ischemic brain stroke: from pathogenesis to therapeutic possibilities.
Abstract Due to very limited therapeutic options, ischemic brain injury is one of the leading causes of death and lifelong disability worldwide, which imposes enormous public health burden. One of the main events occurring with ischemic brain stroke is cell death. Necroptosis is a type of cell death described as a regulated necrosis characterized by cell membrane disruption mediated by phosphorylated mixed lineage kinase like protein (MLKL). It can be triggered by activation of death receptors (eg, FAS, TNFR1), which lead to receptor-interacting serine/threonine-protein kinase 3 (RIPK3) activation by RIPK1 in the ...

Neuroprotective and reparative effects of endoplasmic reticulum luminal proteins - mesencephalic astrocyte-derived neurotrophic factor and cerebral dopamine neurotrophic factor.
Abstract Cerebral dopamine neurotrophic factor (CDNF) and mesencephalic astrocyte-derived neurotrophic factor (MANF) are proteins that have received increasing attention in the last decades. Although they are called neurotrophic factors they are drastically different from neurotrophic factors in their expression and physiological actions. They are located in the lumen of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and their basal secretion from neurons is very low. However their secretion is stimulated upon ER calcium depletion by chemical probes such as thapsigargin, a sarco/endoplasmic reticulum Ca2+-ATPase (SERCA) pump inhi...

Anxiety in Patients With Acute Ischemic Stroke: Risk Factors and Effects on Functional Status
Conclusion: Depressive symptoms are the major correlates of PSA while more severe PSA is associated with poorer ADL and health-related QOL. Acute lesions involving CHWM may correlate with PSA in ischemic stroke patients with mild-to-moderate neurologic deficits, supporting a lesion-location hypothesis in PSA.IntroductionAnxiety is prevalent after stroke and occurs in about one-quarter of stroke survivors (1, 2). Poststroke anxiety (PSA) may have a negative impact on quality of life (QOL) of stroke survivors, affecting their rehabilitation (3). Furthermore, one prospective study found that severe anxiety symptoms were assoc...

The Impact of Comorbidity on Rehabilitation Outcome after Ischemic Stroke.
Authors: Simić-Panić D, Bošković K, Milićević M, Rabi Žikić T, Cvjetković Bošnjak M, Tomašević-Todorović S, Jovićević M Abstract Comorbidity decreases survival but it still remains unknown to what extent functional recovery after ischemic stroke is affected. The aim of this research was to determine the prevalence of the most common comorbidities in patients with ischemic stroke and to examine their predictive value on the functional status and recovery. In order to obtain relevant information for this research, we conducted a prospective study over a two-year period. It included patients with acute/...

Disease characteristics and causes of early and late death in a group of Croatian patients with systemic lupus erythematosus deceased over a 10-year period.
CONCLUSION: Although stroke occurred both in the early and late disease course, it was primarily associated with LD. Given the low proportion of SLE recorded in death certificates of deceased SLE patients, matching of institutional and vital statistics records may be required to assess the true impact of SLE on mortality. The Patterns of Non-vitamin K Antagonist Oral Anticoagulants (NOACs) Use in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation in Seven Balkan Countries: a Report from the BALKAN-AF Survey
ConclusionsNOACs are increasingly used in AF patients in the Balkan Region, but NOAC use is predominantly guided by factors other than evidence-based decision-making (e.g., drug availability on the market or reimbursement policy). Efforts are needed to establish an evidence-based approach to OAC selection and to facilitate the optimal use of OAC, thus improving the outcomes in AF patients in this large region.
